Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

The Senior Research Assistant will be the Editor of juice22, the UW's creative writing journal by and for UW students. The Editor will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Journal's production, from initial calls for submission through to publication, including the organization of related literary events on campus (or online if necessary). This is a part-time position that aims to provide current UWinnipeg undergraduate students with considerable experience in the fields of editing and publishing.

Duties:

  • Works with the Assistant Editor, the editorial team, and the working board of juice;
  • Reports to the Supervisor(s) on a regular basis;
  • Plans editorial meetings and organizes promotional events on campus, including classroom visits and open-mic events;
  • Organizes and hosts the launch;
  • Solicits, reads, and works with the team to evaluate student submissions and choose the content of the issue;
  • Oversees the copy-editing process, working with student writers and/or assigning student editors for all chosen submissions;
  • Oversees the proof-reading process, assigning proof-readers to check the pages before they go to press;
  • Communicates effectively with student editors and writers;
  • Typesets the journal (including layout and design) and co-ordinates the printing;
  • Shares knowledge with the team and trains the Assistant Editor in all tasks involved in producing the journal;
  • Oversees distribution of the journal after it is published (eg. mailing it to other campuses, placing it in bookstores, making consignment deals with bookstores);
  • Updates the juice handbook;
  • Performs office tasks (preparing mail-outs, photocopying).
Qualifications:
  • Must be a currently-registered University of Winnipeg undergraduate student with first-year English plus other English literature and/or writing courses (declared major not required);
  • Excellent academic performance is an asset;
  • Experience in supervising and training others is an asset;
  • Must be reliable and responsible with a strong commitment to the goal of producing a quality journal on time;
  • Must have excellent communication skills (both written and spoken) and strong editorial skills (punctuation and grammar);
  • Must be able to see a project through from beginning to end, meeting deadlines along the way;
  • Must be able to work on campus (or online if necessary) during the day time and during the week (M-F).
  • Must have basic computer skills (email, word processing, scanning, social media, and website maintenance);
  • Experience with desktop publishing programs Adobe, InDesign, and Photoshop 6.0 is an asset
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from October 24, 2022 - September 12, 2023, and the estimated total hours of work will be 70-100.
