Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

Position Overview:

This is a part-time position aimed at current UWinnipeg undergraduate students to gain experience in editing and publishing. The research assistant will work as the Assistant Editor of the journal.

Duties:

  • Works with the Editor, the editorial team, and the working board of juice;
  • Plans editorial meetings with the Editor and helps to organize promotional events on campus, including classroom visits, open-mic events, and the launch;
  • Solicits, reads, and works with the team to evaluate student submissions;
  • Helps to solicit and choose art for the cover;
  • Helps to copy edit the chosen submissions;
  • Communicates effectively with student writers;
  • Helps to proof-read the pages before they go to press;
  • Helps to typeset the journal and co-ordinate the printing;
  • Engages with, and learns about, all aspects involved in producing the journal;
  • Helps with the distribution of the journal;
  • Helps to update the juice handbook;
  • Performs office tasks (preparing mail-outs, photocopying, etc).
Qualifications:
  • Must be a currently-registered University of Winnipeg undergraduate student with first-year English plus other English literature and/or writing courses (declared major not required);
  • Excellent academic performance is an asset;
  • Must be reliable and responsible with a strong commitment to the goal of producing a quality journal on time;
  • Must have excellent communication skills (both written and spoken) and strong editorial skills (punctuation and grammar);
  • Must be able to see a project through from beginning to end, meeting deadlines along the way;
  • Must be able to work on campus (or online if necessary) during the day time and during the week (M-F)
  • Must have basic computer skills (email, word processing, scanning, social media, and website maintenance);
  • Experience with desktop publishing programs Adobe, InDesign, and Photoshop 6.0 is an asset.
  • The period of work will be from Fall 2022-Fall 2023. Hours will vary according to the time of year and tasks underway. The time commitment will be an average of two hours per week in February and March and three hours per week from April through to the printing of the journal in August and the launch of the journal in October.
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from October 24, 2022 - September 12, 2023 and the estimated total hours of work will be 50-75.
