The Role
Douglas College Library invites applications for a Research Data Management & Open Journal Publishing Librarian. This position will be based at the New Westminster Campus and will also have a presence at the Coquitlam Campus. Reporting to the Director, Learning Resources, the primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be:

  • to develop Douglas College’s institutional research data management strategy, in alignment with Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy requirements and in collaboration with key stakeholders in the Library, Research and Innovation Office, and the Centre for Educational and Information Technology
  • to develop a plan for Douglas College Library’s role in supporting this strategy through guidelines, best practices, infrastructure, and resource development
  • to utilize Open Journal Systems software to pilot the inaugural issue of the Douglas College Undergraduate Research Journal
  • to develop a plan for ongoing support for and engagement with OJS for publishing faculty and student journals of interest to key Douglas College stakeholders
  • to provide reference, research, and instructional services online and in person at both the New Westminster and Coquitlam campus locations.

Responsibilities
The Research Data Management & Open Journal Publishing Librarian will collaborate closely with the Director, Learning Resources and Coordinator, Research & Innovation Office and other College stakeholders to:
  • contribute to the planning, implementation and maintenance of technology that supports RDM
  • develop and maintain RDM instructional content on the Douglas College Library website and deliver RDM workshops for faculty
  • leverage tools and community expertise for data management planning and data archiving (e.g., DMP Assistant)
  • assist faculty and researchers in developing plans for the responsible and ethical collection, storage, description, and protection of research data
  • keep current on emerging trends and initiatives in RDM and engage with the broader Canadian research data management community
  • liaise with the Public Knowledge Project in training for and the setup of Open Journal Systems [OJS] software
  • lead and support OJS locally as the College’s online journal publishing tool
  • Assist faculty and students in using OJS to submit, edit, review, and publish the College’s inaugural issue of its student research journal

In addition, this position will also:
  • provide reference and research services online via AskAway and in person across disciplines to support the College’s diverse student, faculty, and staff user community
  • contribute to the success of the library’s instructional program by teaching course-integrated instruction across disciplines as well as workshops on a range of topics for faculty and staff, both online and in person
  • work with Library and College colleagues on a range of teams and committees to support and advance strategic projects and priorities
  • develop their professional knowledge and skills on a continuing basis
  • perform other duties as assigned


To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
Required:
  • MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution
  • 1-3 years of experience providing reference/research services online and in person within an academic library setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English, with a demonstrated ability to facilitate understanding and decision-making among people with diverse backgrounds and/or viewpoints
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing, diverse, and dynamic collegial team environment
  • Commitment to continued professional development and learning
  • Superior interpersonal and intercultural skills
  • Superior critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • Broad knowledge of print and digital information resources across disciplines
  • Demonstrated skill and experience planning and delivering instruction online and in classroom environments across a range of disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience learning and using technology tools for online work and service delivery, such as Teams, BlueJeans, Zoom, BlackBoard, etc.

Preferred:
  • Knowledge of Tri-Agency Research Data Management policies and guiding documents
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research data management principles and practices as well as the research lifecycle and research processes
  • Experience with institutional data repository systems (e.g., Dataverse, FRDR)
  • Familiarity with metadata standards and formats used in research (e.g., Dublin Core, DDI, DOI, ORCID)
  • Knowledge of research data management resources and community in Canada
  • Demonstrated experience with publishing platforms such as Open Journal Systems
  • Experience with open data and/or digital scholarship tools
  • Project management experience
