Founded in 1882, we are Niagara's oldest law firm with locations in St. Catharines and Welland. We are seeking an experienced litigation clerk to support a Senior Partner and Litigators whose responsibilities include civil litigation, estate litigation, and construction law.
Responsibilities will include:
Organizing and maintaining litigation files;
Drafting applications, statements of claim and defence, and other pleadings;
Document production, including preparation of affidavit of documents, summaries of productions, and discovery briefs;
Reviewing and summarizing transcripts of examinations;
Managing undertakings and refusals;
Compiling books of authorities and other briefs;
Preparing charts, chronologies, and summaries of documentary evidence for use on discovery and trial;
Preparing mediation and pre?trial briefs;
Preparing documentation required for appeals, including books of authorities, compendium materials, and assisting with preparation of facta;
Organizing, maintaining, and reporting upon files involving wills, estates, guardianships and litigation arising out of these files;
Arranging and participating in meetings with experts;
Compiling statistics and information and performing research tasks;
Preparing bills of costs; and
Hearing and trial preparation.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
3 to 6 years litigation law clerk experience;
Knowledge of Rules of Civil Procedure and related statutes;
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with clients, lawyers and court offices;
Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and clients;
Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to work well under pressure;
Ability to manage multiple priorities while paying attention to detail;
Excellent interpersonal and client service skills, strong initiative and exceptional ability to work in a team oriented atmosphere;
Strong computer skills (including Microsoft Office);
Ability to work as a team player and independently as required;
Ability to prioritize and focus; and
Maturity, consistency of approach, and ability to relate to all levels within the firm.
