Job Description

The Senior Director, Clinical Education reports to the Executive Director, PHSA Professional Practice and Policy Office, and is responsible for guiding the strategic planning, development, delivery and evaluation of high quality nursing and allied health education and education services, mentorship, research and knowledge translation activities across PHSA. The Senior Director of Clinical Education optimizes the uptake of evidence-informed practices through research and by providing education and mentorship to enhance knowledge and skills and foster a culture that values clinical inquiry and excellence in care. Oversees PHSA coordination and decision-making of clinical education including resource development and distribution. The Senior Director is an ambassador and advocate of education to promote an organizational culture of learning, leadership, and continuous development and to advance a standard of excellence in health care education that serves students, staff, patients/families and the public. The Senior Director also works collaboratively with Education counterparts across PHSA programs and services, provincial health networks, academic partners and other B.C. Health Authorities to support planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of key education initiatives that involve PHSA staff and clients.

What you'll do

  • Provides strategic leadership, coordination and decision making within PHSA on matters related to the development and implementation of education including education needs assessments, planning, instructional design, organizational readiness, resource development, resource distribution, education delivery modes, and research and evaluation of education.
  • Oversees and ensures the provision of comprehensive and effective staff continuing education that addresses clinical program needs now and into the future for new and continuing staff, and contributes to the delivery of high quality and safe care.
  • Establishes learning strategies that enable: interactive, experiential learning, and experimentation with new knowledge informing new practices through learning simulation, user experience, and innovation. Develops an implementation strategy to integrate activities with practice leaders, clinical educators, and quality coordinators as appropriate.
  • Negotiates and collaborates with academic partners and many other provincial, national and international academic institutions regarding the terms of affiliation agreements and the placement of students.
  • Provides leadership in the development of a learning framework to guide and promote learning and a knowledge translation strategy that facilitates ongoing relationships between evidence and practice transformation for PHSA staff.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in adult education and health care by reviewing literature, attending relevant conferences/continuing education, liaising with external organizations, industry advisory groups and members of professional associations. Identifies and incorporates industry innovations related to learning and knowledge translation and best practices into the operational framework.
  • Builds research capacity through research skill development and the conduct of practice based, collaborative research.
  • Leads the development of PHSA education policies, systems and procedures, standards and outcomes and assures quality in PHSA education programs, research and services.
  • Through education sessions, mentorship and consultation with staff, will develop, implement and evaluate the impact of evidence-informed interventions that address identified gaps in care delivery. Collaboration with other evidence-based practice and quality improvement leads/experts and resources will be sought to support this work and to ensure alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Liaises with leadership across the health system and academic community as it relates to promoting the adoption of informatics competencies through education and knowledge translation for nursing and allied health disciplines.
  • Translates and synthesizes research data and outcomes for effective knowledge transfer to other health care practitioners and staff.
  • Works in close collaboration with the Education teams at the PHSA programs and in liaison with affiliated research institutes, academic institutions, regulatory and funding bodies to guide the development and support for clinical interprofessional research.
  • Establishes an environment of coaching, mentoring and teaching that enables nursing and health disciplines to conduct collaborative research in their program areas.
  • Oversees the operation of the department to ensure that the following functions are effectively managed:
  • Consultation and direct support to PHSA programs/professional disciplines for program development, learning needs assessment, curriculum development, design of learning materials, education implementation plans and evaluation, collaborative research and promoting evidence informed practice.
  • Coordinated planning for education initiatives with partners in clinical, research and academic programs such as simulation education.
  • Supportive interconnections between researchers, practitioners and students.
  • Student clinical placements and affiliation agreements with education institutions.
  • Provision of common resources such as classroom facilities, classroom presentation equipment, technology support including media production and services, academic library access for staff, patient and family library services, graphics design, desktop publishing, e-learning and education administrative services.
  • Develops, determines, and monitors budgets for the department, including cost centres for, Clinical education, Library and Media Services, Administration, and various projects (such as conferences, research challenges and Special purpose funds). Liaises with representatives of Finance, Management and Education teams across PHSA on budget matters.
What you bring

A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master's degree in a relevant field such as, Education (Adult Education, Education Leadership, Education Administration), Health Care or Nursing. At minimum of ten (10) years' of experience in leadership roles, including five (5) years' of recent, related health care experience.

Progressive experience in adult education instructional design, curriculum development, instruction and evaluation. Ability to provide leadership and advance the practice of education in a health care organization in accordance with that organization's strategic goals and priorities. Proven record of scientific achievements and demonstrated examples of related published work. Proven ability to coach and grow teams of educators. Ability to provide leadership and advance the practice of education in a health care organization in accordance with the organizations' strategic goals and priorities. Demonstrated ability to integrate knowledge of learning and adult education principles in health care education programs. Ability to advance strategic initiatives, project planning and implementation in an inter-professional, matrixed and multi-program setting and ability to effect change. Ability to assess and implement classroom and production technologies to advance education. Excellent decision maker with the ability to establish and implement priorities. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to understand and communicate effectively with others at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead staff as a positive role model and promote effective teamwork. Demonstrated aptitude for progressive, innovative thinking. Ability to conceptualize research questions and collaborate with researchers and key stakeholders. Superior analytical, problem-solving, and system analysis skills to resolve clinical/research and complex issues efficiently and resourcefully. Ability to synthesize related data/information and present information in concise, understandable and meaningful ways in order to utilize research findings into practice. Demonstrated ability to consult, teach, and promote research in a clinical and continuing education environment. Ability to advance strategic initiatives, project planning and implementation in an inter-professional and multi-program setting and ability to effect change.
