Your Opportunity:

Labour Relations is currently recruiting a Temporary Full-Time Senior Labour Relations Advisor to join the Provincial Labour Relations team. The LR team provides focused LR support and expertise to the organization and leads collective bargaining negotiations with AHS’ union partners on behalf of AHS. In joining this highly-respected team, you will provide expert advice on significant issues relating to AHS’ unionized workforce. You will work closely with your assigned portfolio, a team of 15-35 Human Resource (HR) professionals, to provide direction and support on managing the employment relationship for unionized employees. This includes a wide range of performance management and accommodation issues, policy development and consultation, collective agreement interpretation and administration, and strategic grievance handling. You will also provide education on LR topics to HR professionals and management, participate in grievance arbitration and mediation, act as AHS’ nominee on arbitration boards, and at times act as AHS’ counsel at arbitration. Your expertise will be guided by established Canadian labour arbitration and contract interpretation principles; employment, workplace and human rights legislation; developed knowledge of AHS’ collective agreements including bargaining history, arbitration decisions, and labour relationships with the various unions. You are an exceptional communicator with strong analytical skills, organizational skills, influencing skills, client-focused orientation and commitment to providing quality services and have the ability to foster a climate of cooperation and establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Description:

The Senior Advisor – Labour Relations provides advice and guidance to clients on complex people issues including those related to culpable and non-culpable performance management, employee discipline and dismissal, attendance management, accommodations, investigations and grievances. In addition, the Senior Advisor plays a key role in stakeholder relations, coordinating issue management on behalf of Labour Relations. This role provides leadership in the development and implementation of assigned projects and programs, contributes to the creation and delivery of LR education within AHS, leads various Labour Relations meetings, committees and project teams, and contributes to the strategic planning and systematic evaluation of Labour Relations programs and services. The Senior Advisor – Labour Relations will work to ensure Alberta Health Services and Human Resources values, goals and principles are implemented and integrated in the delivery of human resource services for all AHS leaders, employees, physicians and volunteers.

Required Qualifications: A minimum of a post-secondary degree in Human Resources or related area. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Human Resources in a unionized environment. Proven ability to interpret legislation/collective agreements/policy/arbitration decisions, and use same to inform practical recommendations suited to the circumstances. Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered. Additional Required Qualifications: Developed coaching skills, and ability to translate body of knowledge, methodologies, and processes for client’s quick understanding and use. Demonstrated ability to facilitate change. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in developing and delivering education and training is an asset. CPHR or other recognized designation. 10+ years’ experience in Human Resources in a unionized environment. Focused Labour Relations experience. Previous experience in an organization of similar size and complexity. Previous experience in a healthcare environment.
