About the role

We are looking for a Senior Advisor, Communities to be responsible for ensuring that DDMI maintains a positive relationship and open lines of communication with all external stakeholders including the five designated Indigenous participation groups and associated communities, governments, internal stakeholders, and our employees.

Reporting to the Communities and Social Performance (CSP) Manager, this role requires an experienced communities professional with the ability to operate in a complex matrix structure and manage the requirements of multiple internal and external stakeholders.

Working on a Monday to Friday schedule at the Yellowknife Corporate office, you will:
  • Develop and implement the multi-year Communities plan for Diavik that includes social risk analysis, stakeholder mapping and an engagement strategy that addresses business objectives and manages community risks
  • Provide leadership and represent DDMI with Diavik Participation Agreements organizations and Socio-Economic Monitoring Agreement partners through closure
  • Leverage Diavik's community initiatives to deliver business objectives and mitigate risks
  • Ensure Diavik's compliance with Rio Tinto Communities and Social Performance Standard inclusive of social risk, community complaints and grievances, cultural heritage management and social knowledge base
  • Develop and maintain internal and external relationships and networks that develop and enhance key Communities and Social Performance objectives
  • Provide Communities support across departments to ensure effective delivery of cross-functional goals and business priorities
  • Identify opportunities for business development and capacity building with communities
About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • Minimum 3 years' experience working in the mining industry and/or associated industry - with experience at a remote mine site being an asset
  • Minimum 5 years demonstrated experience in community relations and/or communications
  • Proven ability to develop robust relationships with Indigenous communities, governments and external stakeholders to reach agreements that align with the needs of the community and the business
  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Community Relations, or related fields
  • Culturally appropriate communication, engagement and presentation skills for within the business, community stakeholders and government agencies
  • Demonstrated problem solving in areas where there are competing interests and limited resources
  • The ability to be a team player and to network and work effectively across multiple interfaces
  • The incumbent should have a very good understanding of the geography of northern Canada, northern politics, and Indigenous culture
  • Readiness for occasional travel to remote communities, the mine site and work outside of regular hours from time to time
  • Must have a Class 5 driver's license
Northern residency and experience working in a cross-cultural environment, coupled with knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities presented to those living in the North, are assets.
