Senior Advisor, Indigenous Relations
The Opportunity
Working with the Alberta Energy Regulator's (AER) Resident Elder and leading through influence across the organization, you are an experienced professional that leads the AER’s Indigenous Relations program. You are responsible for the development of a strategic, multi-year program to ensure the effectiveness of the AER’s corporate and regulatory approaches to Indigenous Relations, including the AER’s engagement and communication program. To do this extensive work, you have deep experience advising on complex and important issues associated with interactions with Indigenous peoples, Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, and historic and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples within a regulatory and policy context. You are change savvy and confident engaging with employees, industry, government representatives, peer regulators, and Indigenous communities.

Your Key Responsibilities:


  • Reporting to the Director, Engagement and Communication you will lead a strategic, multi-year Indigenous Relations program and provide ongoing advice and support to relevant AER programs, projects, and routine regulatory activities across the lifecycle of energy development in Alberta.

  • Work with the AER’s Resident Elder and senior leadership team to provide strategic advice, employee engagement, and learning opportunities for the organization.

  • Represent the Engagement and Communication branch and the AER on internal and external committees, boards, and advisory tables, including partnering with the AER’s Resident Elder to guide the work of the Elder’s Circle.

  • Partner with AER employees across the province to create and maintain valuable relationships of mutual respect and trust with Indigenous communities across Alberta.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, environmental studies, natural resource management, forestry, or a related field; or equivalent lived experience

  • 15 years progressive professional experience; 8+ years successfully working with Indigenous communities, or resource development companies, government ministries, or agencies within an Indigenous Relations context

  • Significant experience leading strategic initiatives related to Indigenous peoples in Canada, ideally with expertise in strategic planning and execution, producing results within a regulatory or government environment

Additional Requirements and Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Possess a fully valid driver’s license along with a positive driving record. The word "fully" describes the criteria for a class 5 as opposed to a graduated license, and "positive driving record" as defined in the AER driving policy.

  • Occasional overnight travel required.
