Job Description


The Centre for Youth Bipolar Disorder (CYBD) is a clinical research program focused on youth bipolar disorder. CYBD activities include intervention studies, observational studies, biological studies, and knowledge translation relevant to youth bipolar disorder.

We are seeking a full-time, contract, Scientific Associate with multimodal neuroimaging experience and skills. The incumbent will report to the Director of CYBD and join a clinical research team working on a number of neuroimaging research studies. In this position, you will be responsible for working both autonomously and in a team of research staff to achieve study targets.

The successful candidate will be required to establish local collaborations, and provide practical training, supervision, and consultation of undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral trainees, and research staff. Responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct brain image analysis of structural and functional imaging data in normal and patient populations including bipolar disorder (including MRI segmentation, 3D volumetric analysis, cortical thickness measures, lesion localization, tracing and volumetrics, image co- registration, SPM, VBM, Tensor Based Morphometry/tractography, Diffusion Tensor Imaging, and familiar with fMRI).
  • Conduct cardiac and vascular imaging analyses in normal and patient populations (including gross cardiac structure and function, myocardial oxygenation, and aortic pulse wave velocity).
  • Lead international collaborations with ENIGMA (a neuroimaging consortium) by employing their standardized processing pipelines and by leading research proposals.
  • Assist with the conceptualization and writing of research grants to funding agencies such as CIHR.
  • Teach in-house image analysis techniques to students, post-doctoral fellows, and other researchers.
  • Perform literature searches and statistical analyses
  • Participate in the dissemination of research results through conference presentations and publications, and by helping trainees with these outputs as well.

The Scientific Associate will also contribute to mentorship of staff and research trainees. You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. This position is located at 80 Workman Way.

Qualifications
  • The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in relevant discipline (e.g. health sciences) combined with three (3) years of relevant experience conducting brain and cardiothoracic image analysis.
  • Previous experience in an academic research setting is an asset.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in neuroimaging (i.e., SPM, freesurfer, FSL, ANTs) and statistical software (i.e., matlab, SPSS, R) is required.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral/written), and organizational skills are required; along with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to exercise initiative and good judgment is required for this position. The successful candidate will have the ability to multi-task and produce high-quality, accurate work in a fast-paced environment, while meeting deadlines.
  • The ideal candidate should have an excellent record of scientific accomplishments (e.g. publications), complemented by strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  • The applicant will demonstrate a commitment to conducting and fostering research and enthusiasm regarding participating in multidisciplinary research and training activities.
  • Superior interpersonal and organizational skills along with analytical and problem solving skills are required.
  • Candidates require the ability to work effectively in a variety of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
