The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Scientific Associate I to join the PanCuRx team. PanCuRx falls within Clinical Translation at OICR. It is a translational research initiative that aims to significantly improve the lives of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma and biliary tract cancer. We do this by generating new knowledge about genetic and biologic subsets of disease, mechanisms of tumorigenesis, and unique treatment options. We generate multiple independent genomic analyses including next-generation whole genome and whole transcriptome sequencing. Analysis is performed on cutting-edge IT infrastructure including a multi-petabyte storage system and a >6,500-core compute cluster.

Launched in December 2005, OICR is an independent institute funded by the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. Position responsibilities include:

  • Designing, implementing and applying algorithms for the analysis of whole genome and RNA sequencing.
  • Interpreting and integrating diverse datasets.
  • Running and maintaining genomic pipelines, and automating data analysis and reporting tasks.
  • Performing downstream data modeling, including visualization, pathway analysis and clinical association studies.
  • Providing statistical input to data analysis.
  • Developing and maintaining project databases and streamlining data uploading when necessary.
  • Performing analysis on genomic data, transforming raw data into meaningful information for biologists and/or clinicians.
  • Ensuring that data is managed efficiently, securely, and without loss or corruption through its lifecycle.
  • Responsible for researching, planning, implementing, and testing bioinformatics software tools that meet the analysis needs for specific collaborative projects.
  • Working collaboratively with members of other OICR programs and departments to identify and solve informatics problems.
  • Demonstrating strong understanding of relevant literature.
  • Developing new techniques and procedures, as required.
  • Applying fundamental knowledge of research principles, theories and concepts.
  • Exercising fairly independent judgement, initiative, and decision making to resolve technical problems.
  • Liaising with the OICR information technology group to develop hardware and software specifications to support the responsibilities described above.
  • Providing high quality documentation, installation guides and other materials to assist users in installing, configuring and using software that will be developed during the course of your employment.
  • Automating data management and analysis processes.
  • Training others and assisting in day-to-day activities.
  • Preparing manuscripts for publication of research results.
Qualifications:
  • Skill and knowledge acquired through completion of advanced postgraduate studies (scientific; Doctoral Degree) or equivalent.
  • Experience with some degree of specialization in analysis of cancer \xe2\x80\x9comics.\xe2\x80\x9d
  • Expert knowledge of scripting languages (R, Python required; JAVA, Perl, C++, Linux beneficial), source-code control with GitHub.
  • At least 2 papers (or other scientific contributions like patents, software, documentation, etc) as a first author in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Work involves applying different/indirectly related processes/methods/techniques, requiring selecting appropriate course of action from a limited number of established alternatives.
  • Experience in the preparation of grants, publications and presentations.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • All candidates must be able to function proficiently in English.
