Position Overview

The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Technician. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Associate will report to the Principal Investigator.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for extraction and quantification of RNA and subsequent analysis using q PCR techniques
  • Responsible for the development and optimizing new primer set for qPCR analysis
  • Ability to trouble shoot challenges to successful outcomes with this technology
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of experiments following the guidelines of the research protocols and SOPs of the laboratory
  • Responsible for performing laboratory related functions which includes proactive maintenance of equipment and chemicals and disposal when required
  • Must follow safety protocols when operating laboratory equipment and ensure laboratory and work area are kept clean and safe
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
  • Must be able to train other staff and students in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols as required
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Biological Science required
  • Masters degree in a relevant field an asset
  • Five or more years of technical experience working in a research laboratory
  • Proficient in working with various biological samples from both animal and human sources (e.g., blood, cells and tissues)
  • Required expertise in nucleic acid isolation from biological samples
  • Proficient in Real Time PCR for detection and quantification of different molecular markers as required by the projects
  • Must be experienced in cell culture techniques
  • Proficiency in cell lysate preparation, running of polyacrylamide gels, western blots, ELIZA, immunocytochemistry, immuno-histochemistry
  • Functional level of expertise in mRNA isolation from tissues, qPCR, data analysis, and general molecular and cell techniques
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is required
  • Maintenance of laboratory chemicals via Chematix
  • Ability to interact with internal and external stake holders
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel), Internet skills
  • WHMIS
