About MSSU Research

The Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU), formed in 2013, is one of eleven geographically based research units across Canada designed to provide methodological, data, knowledge translation and capacity building activities that facilitate the conduct of high quality research to improve the health of the people living in the Maritime Provinces. By design, the MSSU addresses the health research priorities of government and provincial health authorities, while also serving as a resource to health researchers and the public. The MSSU is dedicated to supporting patient-oriented research and decision-making that will reflect the needs and values of Maritime patients.

The MSSU functions as a Maritime organization designed to build health research resources, to focus on collaborative opportunities and to perform research projects based in two or three provinces. In addition, each province has its own node that functions somewhat independently to support research projects that take place predominantly within the single province. These provincial nodes are supported by provincial advisory committees that oversee the research related activities taking place in each provincial node.

About The Position

Reporting to the Director of Maritime SPOR Support Unit (MSSU), the Research Cornmunications Advisor is responsible for managing communications and public relations activities. The Research Communications Advisor is responsible for publications, online, e-communications, social media, marketing, exhibitions and interpretation services. The purpose of this position is to ensure that opportunities for increasing the profile of the MSSU are maximized, that written materials (publications or online) are of a high quality and are available in both official languages and meet accessibility standards.

The role encompasses the full range of communication deliverables, providing advice and guidance to ensure a consistent and appropriate approach to all communications. The position requires a strong communicator who has the ability to deliver to tight deadlines.

Some of the primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Support the staff and clientele of the MSSU with communication deliverables and media relationships
  • Coordinate communications activities such as responding to inquiries, collaborating on report preparation and style guides edit, review and/or write all publications for the MSSU.
  • Prepare highly readable written materials, ensuring consistent and effective style for all MSSU
  • Maintain up-to-date compendium of tables, charts, graphs on MSSU supported research
  • Suggest and create new content areas of the MSSU website and advise/edit web content where appropriate
  • Develop and maintain on-line communications such as communities of practice, blogs and resource library
  • Maintain social media channels - Twitter, Facebook, etc.
  • Identify new developments and opportunities for showcasing MSSU
  • Provide guidance on best practice and methods of communication to a wider external audiences, including health care practitioners, decision-makers and the public
Qualifications

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
  • Post-secondary degree in the area of marketing, journalism, communications or an equivalent field required
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may be considered
  • Two (2) years\' experience in press and web based releases to the public required
  • Work experience in a health or research setting an asset
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Well developed verbal and written communications skills, report-writing and interview experience
  • Demonstrated editing skills and updating content through a content management system (CMS) i.e. Word Press preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise with Canva and In Design
  • Experience writing clear and concise press releases, briefing notes and other impactful communication deliverables
  • Ability to translate technical knowledge ensuring it is relevant to the audience
  • Ability to prioritize workload in order to meet deadlines and show independence when addressing allocated tasks
  • Strong collaborative/team skills in addition to working autonomously
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to gain the trust/confidence of key internal and external stakeholders and be able to take responsibility for the delivery of high quality work

Hours of Work

Long assignment, full-time position (75 hours bi-weekly)

Salary Information

$34.07 hourly - $42.59 hourly

$66,437 annually - $83,051 annually
