About the Opportunity

The Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU), formed in 2013, is one of eleven geographically based research units across Canada designed to provide methodological, data, knowledge translation and capacity building activities that facilitate the conduct of high-quality research to improve the health of the people living in the Maritime Provinces. By design, the MSSU addresses the health research priorities of government and provincial health authorities, while also serving as a resource to health researchers and the public. The MSSU is dedicated to supporting patient-oriented research and decision-making that will reflect the needs and values of Maritime patients.

The MSSU functions as a Maritime organization designed to build health research resources, to focus on collaborative opportunities and to perform research projects based in two or three provinces. In addition, each province has its own node that functions somewhat independently to support research projects that take place predominantly within the single province. These provincial nodes are supported by provincial advisory committees that oversee the research related activities taking place in each provincial node. The MSSU has staff located in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Saint John, Fredericton, and Moncton, New Brunswick; and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

The MSSU Research Assistant works under the direction of the Research Manager and supports the Senior Health Researcher(s) in the research activities of the MSSU. The Research Assistant is responsible for managing the administrative duties for multiple research projects simultaneously and is a contributing member of multi-disciplinary research teams.

The following are the primary responsibilities of the Research Assistant:
Research Support

  • Provide logistical support to research teams, including scheduling meetings, communicating with team, and preparation of meeting notes
  • Provide research support to projects, which may include, preparation of Research Ethics Board (REB)applications, data collection (qualitative and quantitative), survey programming, data analysis, and preparation of research reports and publications
  • Manage tasks of concurrent projects with shifting priorities and deadlines
Administrative Support
  • Provide administrative support, including tracking and coordination, for the MSSU Trainee Support Program
  • Provide administrative support, including photocopying and booking of meetings, meeting space, and catering, as required
  • Attend, record and distribute minutes for meetings, as required
About You

We would love to hear from you if you have:
  • Completion of a relevant Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with experience in research required.
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in a health research, health services, or related field preferred (e.g., Epidemiology, Psychology, Public Health).
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in a research environment required
  • Previous experience in a health care / research setting considered an asset
  • Experience managing administrative tasks for multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with patient engagement and / or public relations an asset
  • Demonstrated oral and written fluency in English required
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
  • Competence in using scientific journal search engines (PubMed, Ovid, Google Scholar) an asset
  • Competence with data analysis software (SPSS, STATA, R, SAS) an asset
  • Management and analysis of quantitative data (e.g., descriptive statistics, parametric and non-parametric tests) an asset
  • Experience conducting interviews or focus groups an asset
  • Competence with reference manager software (Endnote, Mendeley) an asset
  • Experience with the preparation of Research Ethics Board (REB) materials and applications an asset
  • Experience with the preparation of materials for reports, presentations, papers, and other knowledge translation materials as appropriate an asset
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint) and email required
  • Well-developed organizational, time management and daily planning skills
  • Ability to work well independently as well as within a multi-disciplinary, multi-site team environment
  • Ability to deal with a wide variety of people and personalities in a professional manner
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
Hours of Work

Long Assignment, Full-Time position (75 hours bi-weekly)
Beginning June 12, 2023, until June 12, 2024 - with the possibility of renewal.
Dates are approximate and are subject to change.

Salary Information

$21.58 - $26.98 hourly
$44,802 - $52,605 annually
