Description

The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of all maintenance and construction projects on Salvation Army facilities in Yellowknife.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of Maintenance Plans (10%):

\xc2\xb7 Becoming familiar with the property, facilities, and equipment

\xc2\xb7 Establishing facilities & equipment routines or plans to maximize useful life of the facilities.

\xc2\xb7 Recommending to Operations Manager new policies & procedures for improvement in efficiency and safety

\xc2\xb7 Undertaking the maintenance in accordance with the plans

Maintenance and Repair of Property/Facilities (55%):

\xc2\xb7 Identifying facilities & equipment maintenance or repair requirements

\xc2\xb7 Assessing program room upon program participants\' withdrawal from program for damages and other maintenance issues and repairing before release of room back to program use

\xc2\xb7 Estimating Cost and obtaining approval to proceed

\xc2\xb7 Obtaining materials and supplies and undertaking the work necessary to meet building codes.

\xc2\xb7 Performing basic trade skills of electrician, carpenter., plumber, mechanical, or painter

\xc2\xb7 Identifying the requirement for specialized trades/skills and obtaining the services of commercial tradesman with approval

\xc2\xb7 Responding to emergency situations

\xc2\xb7 Rotating with Operations Manager and/or other operations supervisors to handle after-hour situations.

\xc2\xb7 If certified, performing boiler checks.

\xc2\xb7 Completing other tasks as assigned

Supervision of Minor Facilities Construction & Renovations (10%):

  • Preparing plans in consultation with Operations Manager
  • Estimating cost of project
  • Obtaining materials, supplies, approvals, and contractors or staff/volunteers to complete the project.
  • Personally, completing or overseeing project to completion
Supervision of staff/volunteers (5%):
  • Supervising staff/volunteers for the completion of building repair requirements
  • Working with volunteers from within the programs
  • Assessing potential volunteers to determine existing skills and suitability for volunteering.
  • Providing work experience, skill development, and personal coaching to assist volunteers for future employment.
Oversight of Facilities Improvement & Capital Projects (10%):
  • Assisting with the planning
  • Organizing and scheduling contractors
  • Monitoring the progress of the project
General administration (10%):
  • Maintaining maintenance logs
  • Maintaining records in accordance with The Salvation Army\'s Accreditation Standards
  • Filing all contractor maintenance reports
  • Maintaining and upkeeping of a procedure manual
  • Preparing purchase order requisitions following established guidelines
  • Attending departmental meetings
  • Attending other meetings as requested by the Operations Manager
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of high school plus additional courses in facilities management or equivalent
  • 5th Class Engineer would be considered an asset.
  • NWT Boiler certification would be considered an asset.
  • 3-5 years of maintenance/repair experienceNote: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

\xc2\xb7 Effective interpersonal relationship building and coaching skills.

\xc2\xb7 The ability to problem-solve and manage crises and conflict.

\xc2\xb7 The ability to plan working day and work effectively independently.

\xc2\xb7 Computer Literacy

\xc2\xb7 Ability to work within the mandate of and embrace the mission of The Salvation Army Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:
  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Valid First Aid certificate
  • WHMIS
  • The Salvation Army on-line certification for abuse prevention
  • Clear internal abuse registry check
  • Participate in mandatory yearly training.
Working conditions:

\xc2\xb7 Working environment is typically a light industrial environment.

\xc2\xb7 Work involves dust, noise, handling of chemicals, paints, solvents, working in confined spaces, on ladders or scaffolds. Interior and exterior working conditions in all seasons. (including winter at -40c)

\xc2\xb7 Hours of Work: This is a Full-time position based on 40 hours per week. Normal flexible hours of work - 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday; \xc2\xbd hour unpaid meal break.
