Role & Responsibilities:
  • Manage the delivery of medium-risk S&T projects to meet schedule, cost, quality, and safety objectives to the full satisfaction of customers.
  • Project planning, budgeting, and resource allocation, through discussions with project stakeholders to define the scope of the project, deliverables, and timing. May lead 10-15 projects totalling $5M to $10M annually, over a 3-5-year horizon.
  • Secure resources through resource/functional managers to execute the project.
  • Manage and report on project performance to stakeholders and management. Lead the ongoing delivery of project objectives including setting project related performance objectives, providing regular feedback and guidance to project staff. Establish and administer project budgets and schedules and approve changes to scope of work within project management guidelines.
  • Manage project risk with regular review with development of mitigation strategies and escalation to Management, as required.
  • Conduct monthly review of project performance using the corporate systems and explain variances and action plans to address the same.
  • Strong communication skills are essential, both verbal and written.
  • Strong presentation skills. Can make effective presentations to internal and external audiences, consistently at senior level levels and is savvy at using all venues of media technology in the delivery of professional presentations. Can make effective presentations in the absence of media technology.
  • Negotiate with suppliers, contractors, and internal staff, to ensure project phases are delivered on time, within budget and at the customer\'s expected level of delivery/quality.
  • Reports on project performance to customers, management, and other project stakeholders. Manages customer expectations and satisfaction throughout the project\'s duration.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor (honours) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing, OR membership in an Engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization, OR a certificate from the Project Management Institute (PMI).
  • 5-10 years progressive experience and resulting knowledge of applying 9 Project Management Areas (Scope, Cost, Time, QA, Communications, Human Resources, Risk, Procurement, and Integration) to medium-risk projects. Experience in R&D projects is an asset. Experience managing many projects over one large project is an asset.
  • Ability to nurture and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with a moderate number of stakeholders, project teams, and managers.
  • Ability to build and sustain multiple moderately sized teams; typically, between 6 and 12 members per team.
  • Ability to develop a coherent project proposal with input from project team members regarding scope, schedule, and cost, identifying and closing gaps and omissions in that input, in accordance with good project management practices and lessons learned.
  • Ability to proactively seek input from subject matter experts within whose domain may intersect with the project.
  • Ability to augment existing corporate tools to deliver good project management, for example, through custom spreadsheets, word processing documents, and schedules.
  • Ability to negotiate for resources, whether internally or with external customers.
  • Ability to understand the relative priority of the projects in the overall context of entire corporate portfolio, and to make recommendations and decisions that align with those priorities.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • A thorough knowledge of business and management principles involved in project planning, budgeting and resource allocation, leadership techniques and coordination of resources. Good knowledge of procurement and financial processes. Experience with Microsoft Suite Applications (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Outlook). Good knowledge and demonstrated experience in application of negotiation skills. Good knowledge and demonstrated experience in application of contract administration, and oversight to effectively manage the output of external suppliers.
