One Year Contract (with the possibility of extension)
The Diocese of Hamilton is looking for an impassioned social justice advocate to join our Office for Refugees.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Program Coordinator will report to the Director, Office for Refugees, and will manage the Diocese of Hamilton\xe2\x80\x99s refugee sponsorship caseload after we receive official confirmation that sponsored refugees have been approved for travel to Canada. In accordance with our Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) contract with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the Program Coordinator will support a diverse range of community organizations, sponsor teams and individuals to facilitate the successful settlement and integration of refugees into their new lives in Canada. One key focus of this role is to serve and protect all program stakeholders while working in partnership with Canada\xe2\x80\x99s federal immigration department throughout the Sponsorship Period.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinate program implementation to ensure the Office for Refugees honours all government and Diocesan requirements pertaining to post-arrival service delivery and program standards
  • Manage the Diocese of Hamilton\xe2\x80\x99s refugee sponsorship caseload, including sponsors and newcomers, throughout the Sponsorship Period, with the goal of facilitating a seamless transition to post-sponsorship newcomer independence
  • Program innovation and program design responsibilities include creating resources, tools and trainings to facilitate information sharing, improve efficiencies, enhance program capacity, cultivate effective working relationships, manage stakeholder expectations, all while ensuring the provision of high quality service and care
  • Complex case management responsibilities include monitoring all sponsorships and identifying, evaluating and taking action to address concerns and/or new information that could undermine post-arrival sponsorship success and/or lead to a potential breakdown in a sponsorship in Canada. Examples include: secondary migration, domestic violence, newcomer financial hardship, a breakdown in communication between sponsors and newcomers, including cultural misunderstanding and tension, etc.
  • Financial responsibilities include reviewing, amending and implementing sponsorship budgets, managing the issuance of sponsorship funds in trust for newcomers, assessing newcomer income and assets in accordance with IRCC requirements, etc.
  • Provide mentorship, information and advice for newcomers to help guide them in their decision-making. Provide support to all program stakeholders in a range of contexts, including phone calls, emails, Zoom meetings, in-person appointments, home visits, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS \xe2\x80\x93 REQUIRED:
  • Able to respect and support the mission, vision and values of the Diocese of Hamilton
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience (in Canada or overseas) in one of the following areas: refugee protection/advocacy, social justice, government relations, social work or international development/project management
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong ability to develop relationships with diverse partners in a cross-cultural context (i.e., trauma survivors, government officials, church groups, community representatives and international partners)
  • Working knowledge of Canadian refugee law, policy and programming and a strong understanding of the refugee resettlement work of IRCC
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills and a strong ability to be flexible and remain calm in a stressful, sensitive and fluid environment
  • Advanced computer literacy skills, especially using Microsoft Office

QUALIFICATIONS \xe2\x80\x93 ASSETS:
  • Experience as a former newcomer to Canada
  • Experience living, working, studying or volunteering outside of North America
  • Experience preparing immigration and/or refugee sponsorship applications for IRCC
  • Experience managing volunteers
