Purpose

Reporting to the Global Practice Lead Mineral Systems within our global Resource Centre of Excellence, in this strategic and highly visible role, the successful candidate will be instrumental in defining and influencing global leading practice in the understanding and application of mineral systems to the access, appraisal and extraction of future facing mineral resources.

About the Role

As a trusted Advisor and Subject Matter Expert, you will have the opportunity to drive the following activities:

• Lead the continuous development and application of the understanding of global mineral systems for future-facing commodities, including database collection/storage, interpretation and capability development
• Thought leadership internally and externally to BHP in future-facing commodities linked to global earth and mineral systems, including maintenance of a pan-commodity research roadmap and input and direction to external research collaborators and industry fora
• Champion cross-function sharing and collaboration in application of future-facing commodity systems, including oversight of relevant technical standards
• Specifically build nexus and exploit synergies between geoscience, resource engineering, and strategy teams to inform mineral commodity strategy and create competitive advantage in accessing future facing commodities
• Provision of subject matter expert support and collaboration for exploration targeting, projects, acquisitions and divestments, resource assessment activities within the assets, functions and regions to enable resource discovery and access

Work Location

This role can be based in Perth, Australia or in Toronto, Canada.

About You

Highly respected and globally networked Professional with a reputation built upon scientific depth and breadth, academic leadership, subject matter expertise and innovation. With your ability to build strategic and collaborative partnerships across both academic and industry communities, you enjoy playing an integral role in influencing the research and application of mineral systems science.
In addition, to be successful in this role, you will ideally possess the following:

• Postgraduate degree qualification in a geoscience related field
• Demonstrated high level of understanding of fundamental geoscience
• Demonstrated involvement in teams achieving innovative breakthroughs in understanding or applying of mineral systems science
• Demonstrated experience with application of mineral systems with mineral economics and resource engineering considerations to inform mineral commodity strategy
• A passion for mentoring and coaching geoscientists
• Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new concepts
