We are looking for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to support Rio Tinto Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. The role reports to the Manager, Mine Technical Services and is responsible for providing technical leadership of the geotechnical function to develop and provide best practice, timely and insightful geotechnical information for the mine engineering and operations teams to execute.

This role is a great opportunity for a motivated individual to contribute to developing and enhancing Diavik and Copper and Diamond Technical team capability. This role will work with other geotechnical engineers at Diavik and across Rio Tinto and external experts to manage risk and provide operational and technical support to Diavik. Working on a 4 days in/ 3 days off schedule out of Yellowknife, or a 2 week in /2 week off the key areas of focus of the role are:
  • Provides technical support and advice to operations in areas of geotechnical mine design, operational process practices, and the identification of potential risks that may lead to catastrophic or reputational risks;
  • Integrates rock mass parameters, modelling and monitoring data to derive key mine design criteria and geotechnical constraints for mine design and operations;
  • The design and/or implementation of ground support systems, including QAQC that support and comply with Rio Tinto standards, guidelines and best practice;
  • Provide knowledge and service as required to resolve issues related to geotechnical engineering, and to continuously improve the geotechnical management systems: ensuring integrity of information flow and timeliness of delivery for operational and management purposes;
  • Providing a mix of analytical and empirical analysis complemented by sound operational experience to provide solutions that are innovative and practical for the conditions at each mine site;
  • Provide senior technical leadership, coaching and mentoring of geotechnical professionals to develop individual and team capabilities.
  • Demonstrate visible leadership and coaching in promoting safe behaviours and an interdependent safety culture;
  • Provides technical support to making the best possible capital allocation decisions;
  • Lead and/or actively contributing to improvement and innovation initiatives (including identification, development and implementation) within the geotechnical field.
  • Meet legislative and regulatory requirements in areas of geotechnical engineer;
  • Provide coverage for the Manager during absences and on-call requirements.

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Degree qualification in geotechnical engineering, specialising in rock mechanics or relevant discipline;
  • Technical and operational understanding of underground and / or surface mine design, operating practices and the impact of the mining operations on value chain outcomes
  • A demonstrated and in-depth understanding of rock mechanics and a track record of generating practical and innovative solutions to multi-faceted technical challenges
  • Demonstrated well developed leadership, technical writing and presentation skills for and communicating geotechnical matters including risks and opportunities.
  • Competency in Risk Management and Risk Assessment;
  • Demonstrated ability to drive, implement and manage continuous improvement processes;
  • Capability to provide technical leadership a technical team and draw functions together to ensure best outcome delivery of information to the operational and management teams at DDMI;
  • Demonstrate high levels of initiative and the ability to constructively challenge;
  • Responsive to business requirements in both the short and long term ie balancing the urgent and important;
  • Strong planning, organizational, management and communications skills;
  • Resolves complex problems and takes a new perspective using existing solutions.
  • Northern mining experience preferred and necessary Eligibility for membership in NAPEG (Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut);
Northern residency and experience working in a cross-cultural environment, coupled with knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities presented to those living in the North, are assets. Hiring priority will be given to qualified applicants who are beneficiaries of the DDMI Participation Agreement Groups and to qualified applicants residing in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Territories.
