The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist Engineer, Geotechnical to join our Planning, Engineering, Technology & Development team in Sudbury, ON. This is a permanent position.

The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for providing oversight and assurance on geomechanically modeling, risk assessments, trade-off studies, cost estimation and technical reviews across multiple projects at the FEL1 and FEL2 study phases. The Underground Geotechnical Engineer leads initiatives to optimize mine designs and implementation of improvement ideas, while considering impacts on production, capital costs and operating costs. The role holder is also responsible for developing the geotechnical data collection program to support the FEL studies while ensuring the projects are delivered within scope, cost, and schedule and that the safety and quality objectives agreed for the project are met. Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Perform inspections of open pit and underground workings to assess conditions
  • Complete interactive audits with geotechnical core loggers and consultants responsible for collecting geotechnical, structural and hydrogeological data
  • Lead the geomechanical and geotechnical design input for the project Technical Assurance Reviews, Quantitative Risk Assessments, Engineering Assessments and Maturity Assessments and ensures follow-up actions are completed
  • Lead and review the preparation of geomechanical, Lithological, Structural, Hydrogeological and Geotechnical models and integration of mine designs..
  • Lead the preparation of geomechanical/Geotechnical Scopes of Work and oversee contract management and approval of contract changes related to the geotechnical, geomechanical and hydrogeological scope to ensure accurate submission of work
  • Oversee consultants work to ensure project deliverables are achieved and meet governance
  • Responsible to review engineering designs to ensure geotechnical risks/hazards are identified and that proposed ground support requirements are appropriate for the ground conditions
  • Responsible to review and evaluate the technical work prepared by consultants. Serve as a technical specialist and perform critical review of the geotechnical design aspects of underground mining method selection, stope stability, pillar dimensions, development and infrastructure support and backfill specification
  • Ensure relevant technical experts are involved in the design process. Facilitate the sharing of technical expertise across projects
  • Advise on instrumentation selection and use for microseismic and ground movement monitoring related to FEL 1 and FEL2 studies
  • Conduct analysis and provide recommendations pertaining to stope stability by using numerical modeling techniques and empirical design charts to predict stope performance
About You

Education
  • Undergraduate degree is required
  • P. Eng. designation is required
  • PMP, Advanced Engineering Degree (M.Eng) in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred
Experience
  • 11 to 15 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Experience in delivering FEL 1/2/3 level studies
  • Significant exposure to underground rock mechanics work (consulting and or mining operation)
  • Experience in the study, design, development and/or operation of underground hard rock mines
Skills
  • Unwavering commitment to safety
  • Proficiency in Rock Mechanics modeling software (MAP3D, Rocscience, FLAC3D)
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to present detailed and complicated concepts and information succinctly
  • Ability to work with various groups and gain alignment
  • Flexibility for domestic travel
