The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist Engineer, Ventilation to join our Planning, Engineering, Technology & Development in Sudbury, ON. This is a permanent position.

The Specialist Engineer, Ventilation is responsible for the ventilation designs across multiple projects for the North Atlantic Operations (NL, ON, and MB). The projects include FEL 1 and FEL 2 studies. You will lead the design of ventilation and cooling systems that enhance current technologies and modelling methods such that health and safety standards and legislated requirements are effectively satisfied while enhancing the business case. Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Integrate with the NA Ventilation Design team and share knowledge to foster skills and competencies within the ventilation team and others as required;
  • Collaborate with BM Technical Assurance, Quantitative Risk Analysis, and Maturity Assessment teams to present ventilation & cooling strategies and simulation and modelling results;
  • Recommend to the Manager Underground Projects opportunities for project de-risking and cost optimization such as scheduling improvement and new ventilation and cooling technologies;
  • Lead the ventilation & cooling design input and solutions during project Technical Assurance Reviews, Qualitative Risk Assessments, Engineering Assessments and Maturity Assessments and ensure follow-up actions are completed;
  • Lead the preparation of ventilation design, modelling, schedule optimization and ensure value engineering opportunities are identified;
  • Lead the integration of the Project Ventilation Designs into the Life-of-Mine Ventilation designs and strategy;
  • Lead technical reviews and conduct QA/QC on own studies and studies completed by consultants;
  • Develop business cases, that support the incorporation of new technology and ventilation strategies into the FEL studies, that have a positive impact on HS&E, Production and Costs;
  • Responsible for the Design Primary and Auxiliary Mine Ventilation Systems using numerical modeling tools and the preparation of airflow requirements and heat load calculations;
About You

Education
  • Undergraduate degree is required
  • P. Eng. designation is required
  • PMP designation is preferred
Experience
  • 11 \xe2\x80\x93 15 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Unwavering commitment to safety
  • Experience in delivering FEL 1/2/3 level studies
  • Experience with Electric Vehicles and Refrigeration and heating systems
  • Underground mine design, ventilation, scheduling, and understanding of mining activities
  • Experience working in underground hardrock mine operations and technical services
Skills
  • General knowledge of engineering planning software (Deswik)
  • Extensive knowledge of ventilation modeling software (Ventsim, VNET, CLIMSIM, MineFire,) is recommended
  • Strong communication skills and development of concise documents and presentation materials
  • General knowledge of construction planning, experience with electrical and infrastructure design
  • Knowledge of cash flow modeling techniques and economics is an asset
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with spreadsheet manipulation in Excel
  • Be creative, not only use best and past practices but promote new ways of doing things to maximize the efficiency of ventilation systems to support economic mine designs
  • Flexibility for domestic travel
