Within Complex Care and Rehabilitation at the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury, the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services Program has been offering this unique and enrichening internship opportunity to Psychology students from the University of Alberta for several years. The Post-Secondary Student fulfills an integral, multifaceted role within the program and will work closely with the Psychologist and as an active member of the interdisciplinary team. Psychosocial Rehabilitation is an evidence based approach to recovery that involves working with individuals and their family/support persons who are living with the effects of mental illness. The practice of PSR is guided by the belief that all people have the right to self-determination and are capable and deserving of living to their fullest potential despite having a mental illness. The foundation of our program is built on fostering hope and optimism, individualization of services, a belief in inclusion, supporting diversity, enhancing community connection and integration, living with meaning and purpose, focusing on strengths and abilities and practicing from a solution orientated perspective. The Post-Secondary student - Psychology Marion/Malmo House will assist in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of individuals living with a mental illness. Under the supervision and guidance of a therapist, the student will engage in a wide variety of professional activities including: co-facilitation of process and psycho-educational groups, assist patients in the development of individualized SMART goals and provide ongoing support with goal attainment, work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to provide daily support to patients and families as needed, active involvement of clinical meetings and patient recovery reviews, administration and scoring of psychological assessments, participation in collecting and analyzing data for program outcome measures, assistance with program development and evaluation projects and support presentation and training sessions.
