About the Opportunity Urban Systems is currently looking for a planning student to join our growing Peace practice for a 4 or 8 month paid internship starting May 2023. We strive to create internship opportunities that are challenging, rewarding, and offer exposure to the multi-faceted nature of planning. Our goal is for you to come away with new perspectives and an enhanced skill set that will serve you well in your career in the planning profession. In this position, you will find yourself in a fast-paced consulting environment, working alongside planners and other professionals on a variety of projects for a diverse range of clients. We aim to provide as much freedom and responsibility as you are able to handle, based on the quality of your work, your interests, and your enthusiasm. In general, you can expect to be involved in the following kinds of activities:

  • Conducting research, preparing background reports, and supporting projects for local government, First Nations and non-profit clients (i.e. policy and bylaw analysis, data analysis and presentation, development review reports, studies, bylaws, etc.);
  • Assisting in the preparation of presentations, surveys, reports, agendas, meeting notes, and proposals; and
  • Attending public meetings, workshops, and open houses as required.

About You This position is designed for students currently enrolled in
  • a graduate degree in geography, liberal arts, planning, or other related degree OR
  • an undergraduate degree or master\'s degree in planning (or a related field)

  • Great communications skills, and a demonstrated ability to write well, think critically, ask questions, and work as part of a team;
  • Interest in research, and experience collecting and analyzing qualitative and/or quantitative data;
  • Interest in exploring a wide range of planning topics, including land use planning, housing, parks and recreation, economic development, community governance, local government finance, and transportation;
  • Interest in working with a diverse range of clients including local governments, First Nations, public corporations, private landowners, and provincial and federal governments;
  • Open to working on projects throughout Western Canada with communities of all sizes;
  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to producing high-quality work; and
  • Service-focused with a commitment to exceeding client expectations.
