Opportunity MacEwan University is seeking an individual for Peace Officer for a full-time continuing opportunity with the Security Services department. As a Peace Officer, you will be responsible to work within applicable legislation, university policy and procedure, the criminal code, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and all other provincial/federal legislation. To diminish any risk to the safe learning environment on campus and to protect MacEwan\'s assets. Peace Officers are held accountable to standards by virtue of the Peace Officer Act through their Provincial appointment and are accountable to all MacEwan policies. This position requires extensive foot patrols in and outside buildings, climbing stairs, and dealing with physical confrontation. Peace Officers engage and perform pro-active community duties aligned with Community Response models, including problem-oriented policing and SARA. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responding to alarms, issues with plant systems, emergency telephones and use CCTV (camera) systems.
  • Providing information to staff, students, contractors, patrons, and visitors on request or pro-actively when noticing a person in need.
  • Performing access control duties including but not limited to door unlocks and lock-up, notify or assist removing non-staff to leave the buildings, perform building checks (interior) to insure there are no intruders.
  • Conducting investigations of reported incidents where there is a suspected breach of university policy that will include obtaining witness or complainant statements, photograph scenes, gather physical evidence, protect any crime scene for police response, make detailed notes in notebook, and enter all information into MacEwan\'s incident management software.
  • Providing counter service at the Security Services office that includes issuing keys, contractor passes, recording lost and found complaints, tagging and storing found property, receiving complaints, assisting clients with EPS on-line reporting, answering the telephone, and managing requests for service.
  • Ensuring all material handed over to external police agencies comply with university FOIP procedures..
  • Responding to calls for medical assistance by providing first aid and maintaining the safety of the person for the arrival of EMS.
  • Assisting in providing efficient access to emergency responding agencies when they respond to fire alarms/police calls for service.

  • The ability to perform and make critical, quick decisions in emergency situations.
  • The ability to multitask under pressure.
  • Knowledge of procedures (including safety procedures), regulations, policy, emergency response plans, and the building/campus maps.
  • Knowledge of telecommunication systems including procedures, dispatch 10 code, phonetic alphabet and any standard abbreviations used by the university.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate of a police/peace officer program recognized by the Alberta Solicitor General\'s office that complies with being appointed/ authorized to be a community peace officer in the Province of Alberta.
  • Current First Aid Certificate, ICS 100, ICS200 level training.
  • Minimum two years\' experience as a security agent or peace officer/police officer.
  • Possess a valid P.A.R.E. (Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation) certificate.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • This position can only be held by an authorized appointment by the Province of Alberta. Any cancellation/removal or expiry of that authorization would be cause for termination.
  • This position involves rotating shift work covering 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. This position requires the ability to conduct extensive foot patrols.
