Reporting to the Accounting Manager, we need a Payroll and Benefits Specialist: someone who can take ownership for the accurate and timely processing of benefits and payroll for their 800 salaried and hourly-rate employees who work at different sites across the country. Who you are

You are a payroll professional with 2+ years of payroll and benefits administration experience. You have in-depth knowledge of regulatory payroll tax and legislative requirements including applicable taxable benefits - for multiple provinces, including Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. You are a numbers oriented person, you possess great people skills and also enjoy working with team members to ensure they understand the processes around their pay and benefits. You are adaptable, deadline-driven, solutions-focused and you thrive in a fast-paced environment.

As a Payroll Specialist, you will:

  • Process and reconcile payroll every two weeks. You will accurately and efficiently process payroll for 800 employees. You will:
  • Account for varying hourly, overtime and salaried rates as well as different provincial deduction rates.
  • Coordinate payroll administration, configuration, and modifications. You will record payroll and compensation related entries into the PayWorks payroll/HRIS system.
  • Reconcile payroll to compensation-related General Ledger (GL) accounts in Microsoft Navision.
  • Run 12 additional monthly payments for commissions.
  • Manage and administer. In accordance with the Employment Standards Act, you will manage all changes to payroll and benefits through SunLife. You will:
  • Set up new employees.
  • Employee benefits enrollment and changes.
  • Employee benefits processing.
  • Earnings changes.
  • New or ongoing deductions.
  • Closing payroll for terminated employees.
  • Commission calculation and inclusion for sales employees.
  • Act as a point of contact. You will assist and support employees on a variety of payroll-related issues:
  • Investigate and respond to written and telephone inquiries from employees, supervisors, managers and service providers on issues affecting payroll, i.e., vacation, leave of absences, etc.
  • Provide paperwork including forms and reports as requested and required, i.e., a record of employment, confirmation of salary, TD-1 forms.
  • Support. You will provide backup support, and carry out ad-hoc tasks, special research and analysis projects to support Finance and HR.
What you bring
  • The ideal combination of education and experience. You have a relevant diploma or degree and at least 2 years of experience processing a large payroll in a fast-paced work environment, including year-end processing activities. You have experience preparing detailed analyses of payroll-related data, a respect for the confidential nature of the data you have access to and an in-depth understanding of Canadian payroll compliance and related legislation (CRA, ESA, WSIB, EHT, Privacy). A CPA designation would be ideal.
  • The technical skills. You have advanced Microsoft Office skills and ideally Navision as well through another ERP payroll system is acceptable. You have experience with HRIS applications.
  • The analytical and communication skills. Your written and verbal skills are outstanding. You have strengths in problem-solving and critical thinking.
