About the role
As an Organizer, you will be responsible for developing organizing leads and mobilizing non-unionized workers to form a union with UFCW 1518. Our department is focused on pursuing large, longer-term campaigns - this is why targeted lead generation & campaign planning are essential components of this role. You will also work to develop organizing capacity within our membership and contribute to the development of an organizing culture within the local. This role requires flexibility, initiative, and a deep commitment to social and economic justice. Here's what you can expect to dig into in this exciting, hands-on role:
Key Responsibilities
Lead Generation & Target Research: Actively identify, recruit & nurture organizing leads in target sectors, through a combination of field outreach, one-on-one conversations, hosting meetings/events, etc. Research emergent targets.
Follow Up & Relationship Management: Follow up promptly on organizing leads or prospective leads. Build and maintain relationships with organizing leads & organizing committees to keep them motivated & guide them through the unionization process.
Campaign Planning & Management: Develop & execute advocacy or target-specific campaign plans through time, identifying milestones, tactics & roadblocks. Lead non-union workers through union organizing campaigns. Obtain signed membership cards and maintain campaign momentum.
Education & Mentorship: Work with union members to build organizing capacity within target sectors, by delivering trainings and providing one-on-one support & coaching to members or other staff. Educate non-union workers about their rights and protections during organizing campaigns.
Acquisition of Bargaining Rights Legislation: Prepare and file union certificationapplications, as well as related applications (i.e. variance applications, unfair labour practice complaints, etc) to appropriate Labour Boards (LRB and CLRB). Represent the organization at certification hearings. Ensure compliance with the BC Labour Code during organizing campaigns.
Internal Organizing Support & Collaboration: Support transition & onboarding of new units, working in collaboration with Union Representatives & UFCW Canada Representatives. Support internal organizing projects, particularly relating political action & advocacy (e.g. Lobby Days, Member Committees). Collaborate with the Communications Department to develop digital lead generation campaigns.
Record Keeping & Accountability: Keep records of leads & campaign progress (currently on Action Builder). Keep track of progress towards campaign & individual goals. Report on progress at weekly check ins.
Other Duties (as required)
Member Representation: As needed, assist in contract campaigns, workplace visits, and advocate for members in areas such as health & safety, human rights and grievance management.
Member Engagement: Develop and implement engagement strategies to connect with members and non?members in the workplace and community.
Member Education: Educating workers/members about union membership and other relevant topics. Supporting programs and workshops for members if required.
Qualifications & Requirements
3+ years of professional organizing experience (within unions, community organizations or politics)
Excellent people and interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of mobilizing people and winning campaigns
Knowledge of the BC Labour Code, particularly relating the acquisition of bargaining rights and unfair labour practices. Understanding of the Employment Standards Act.
Advanced verbal communications & public speaking skills
Self-motivated and able to work independently towards goals while maintaining accountability
Ability to act, prioritize and organize time independently
High degree of judgment and confidentiality
Demonstrated commitment to social justice, workers' rights, and equity
Culturally competent in working with diverse communities
Valid class 5 driving license
Able and flexible to travel across the province
Able and flexible to work irregular hours (including evenings & weekends if needed)
Nice to Haves
Past experience representing organizations at Labour Board proceedings (i.e. hearings)
Fluency in a second language is an asset
Experience using Organizing data management platforms an asset
