Job Summary

Conservators manage, preserve, treat, and document works of art, artifacts, and specimens such as paintings, books, installations, pottery, furniture and clothing. -work that may require substantial historical, scientific, and archaeological research. Conservators document their findings and treat items to minimize their deterioration or to restore them to their original state. Conservators are able to determine the best ways to preserve artwork and artifacts. They may be employed by a museum or another institution that has objects needing conservation, or they may be self-employed and have several clients. The role will contribute to the smooth operation, acquisition support and delivery of exhibitions, loans and events at Ithra.

Responsibilities:

  • Working directly under the collection manager on all items related to conservation
  • Setting up documentation systems to manage information on artist materials, interviews, installation requirements, display requirements, history of past uses, conservation records, storage requirements, and resource planning for recurring access useful for sustainable preservation strategies
  • Active involvement in exhibition planning and commissioning of new works, including installation, de-installation, packing, storage, and documentation
  • Monitoring and recording display and storage conditions with the aim of keeping objects in a stable condition
  • Organizing and managing the logistics of short and long-term projects and collaborating with other team members in person and by email
  • Training and developing a team of art handlers
  • Working out creative solutions to clean, support, and repair sensitive objects
  • Examining artifacts, both visually and using scientific tools such as x-rays, infrared photography, and microscopic analysis to determine the extent and causes of deterioration
  • Reporting and documentation, maintaining full conservation records by writing up notes on the object\'s condition and any previous restoration work that has been done
  • Producing a visual record of the object for identification purposes and to illustrate its condition
  • Coordinating with both internal and external parties involved in accordance with procedures and project timelines
  • Advising other organizations on conservation issues as requested
  • Accompanying objects in transit to other locations
  • Keeping up to date with the latest conservation techniques and practices through research and training.
Requirements:
  • This role required candidate to permanently relocate at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
  • Conserves diverse object types and not limited to contemporary works of art (e.g., paper and book specialist or paintings conservator assuming they also have experience in photographs and contemporary/synthetic materials)
  • Bachelor\'s, Honors\', a Master\'s, or PhD in Conservation from a recognized training institution, with 6 to 8 years of relevant practical experience primarily in conserving works of art and objects. Specialization in object conservation is appreciated.
  • Minimum of 3 references (2 professional and 1 character)
  • Portfolio with condition reports, full and detailed treatment proposals, and treatment reports with images. Proven ability to carry out comprehensive and complex conservation treatments/projects based on a documented decision-making process involving risk assessment, careful ethical consideration, and proper collaboration with all relevant stakeholders, while demonstrating a high degree of manual dexterity and technical knowledge whenever required.
  • Possesses initiative, with the ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize work within a given timeframe.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, as well as within a team.
  • Ability to adapt in a multilingual and multiracial environment.
  • Keep up to date with current conservation developments through self-directed learning and training. Evidence of continual professional development is strongly desirable.
  • Ability and experience to coach and impart conservation skills and knowledge effectively.
