About Our Opportunity

Reporting to and working directly with the Senior Conservator in the Interpretation, Collections, and Infrastructure Unit (ICI), you provide technical support in the use, installation, and storage of Nova Scotia Museum (NSM) collections objects at any of the 28 NSM sites across the Province of Nova Scotia. Your work requires a considerable range of technical, planning and communication skills. Your duties require you to consult with a wide range of government and non-government contacts: museum curators and conservators, site staff and contractors. These interactions require strong interpersonal skills to ensure that projects are successfully completed to museum standards within budget and on-schedule.

This position requires a high level of creativity and innovation and enables the ICI Unit to meet the strategic goals of the Department by providing high quality visitor experiences and innovative access to the province\'s heritage resources.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Prepares artifacts and specimens for presentation in a range of installations and/or exhibits at 28 NSM Sites ensuring all display materials are compatible with artifacts and specimens.
  • Has working knowledge of Historic Structures including an understanding of construction techniques of wooden and stone buildings.
  • Knowledge of weight limits (hanging framed art, floor loads, hanging limits on ceilings)
  • Provides consultation and training for site staff regarding exhibit needs and in-house requirements.
  • Fabricates replicas for displays where use of the collection is prohibited.
  • Determines solutions and carries out actions to secure, stabilize and conserve specimens and artifacts in a range of environments (storage, exhibit, in transit, etc.)
  • Plans and produces concept designs for storage, display, and other object-related needs in consultation with Senior Conservator and curatorial staff when required.
  • Fabricates exhibit cases with materials that are compatible with the objects they house.
  • Works with sites to determine proper climate control for the display of the collection, from display cases to historic houses.
  • Maintains and updates knowledge and understanding of materials and agents of deterioration (e.g., light, temperature, and humidity, etc.)
  • Keeps abreast of new information and techniques related to display and storage of museum objects.
  • Understands and carries out best practices for crating and shipping artifacts.
Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role you have Grade 12 plus post-secondary training related to museum technology, conservation, built heritage, or heritage preservation. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.

You have experience and knowledge working in a museum work environment. You have:
  • Knowledge of museum conservation, including preventive conservation
  • Experience working with artifacts
  • Knowledge of mount making and archival materials
  • Knowledge of WHMIS, OHS
  • Knowledge of museum preparation, carpentry methods, metalworking, and safe operation of tools, machinery, and equipment
  • Knowledge and skills working with materials including wood, plexiglass, glass, solvents, finishes
  • Ability to work at heights
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and team building skills
You are computer proficient, including the use of software packages such as Microsoft Office, internet, and web-based applications. The incumbent must be self-directed, able to work independently, but also demonstrate teamwork valuing and respect a diverse and inclusive environment.

Knowledge of CAD, Sketchup, or equivalent, or technical drawing proficiency would be considered an asset.

Additional Information

This is a Term employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of March 31, 2025. The appointment status (\'term\', \'temporary\' or \'casual\') is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade: TE 17

Salary Range: $1,783.71 - $2,094.57 Bi-Weekly
