About Us

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is a part of the Nova Scotia Museum. The Museum collects and interprets the tangible and intangible marine history and experience of Mi\'kma\'ki/Acadia/Nova Scotia. Rooted in an appreciation of this place as an ancient and enduring Indigenous maritime landscape, the museum seeks to understand and represent the region\'s long-established coastal communities and their connections to the broader maritime world.

About Our Opportunity

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (MMA), the Nova Scotia Museum\'s (NSM) flagship branch on the Kjipuktuk/Halifax waterfront, is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic intern to assist with the critical review and digitization of its collection in support of its equity, diversity and inclusion goals. The review aims to identify historical biases in the collection, along with resources with which to support community-driven interpretive renewal. The successful candidate will assist with interpretive renewal planning and implementation in accordance with the museum\'s commitment to diversity and inclusion in its public-facing work. Working under the supervision of the Curator of Marine History, the intern will be a key member of the team developing and implementing these projects.

Following training in collections management principles and procedures, research and reporting practices, database use, digitization equipment and standards, and the principles of interpretive renewal, the intern will undertake research in support of critical review and digitization of the NSM\'s Marine History collection. In conjunction with museum staff, volunteers, and community partners the intern will support the development of new interpretive products related to individuals and communities historically excluded from the museum\'s activities.

The successful candidate will be based at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, 1675 Lower Water Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
