Job Description


CORE FUNCTION:
Under the direction of Director of Exhibitions & Collections/ Chief Curator this position is responsible for the management and supervision of the curatorial team. Responsibilities will also include contributing to the programming and development of major exhibitions, collaboration on integrated program planning and the development of short and long-term curatorial operational plans such as collection development, exhibition program development, and interpretive planning development.

SCOPE AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILIITES:

  • Manages assigned staff; hires, assigns work schedules, plans for future workforce needs in collaboration with the Head of Exhibitions/ Chief Curator. Plans, organizes, directs, monitors and evaluates the work of staff and undertakes disciplinary action when required.
  • Provides curatorial voice for internal and external communication for all exhibition projects; participates in project specific meetings, trouble-shooting issues and post-mortem meetings; schedules and leads curatorial team meetings, sets agendas and prepares planning documents, and communicates action items.
  • Assist in the development of curatorial strategies with an emphasis on expanding research and interpretation to create greater engagement with exhibitions, programs and collections. Serves as the overall content authority for cross platform content development ensuring the balance of scholarship and value for audiences.
  • Works with curators to propose and develop high quality and engaging ideas and experiences from conception to delivery including publications and public.
  • Conceptualizes and delivers exhibitions in collaboration with leadership. Develops exhibition proposals for approved projects, including research, production, presentation and publication components.
  • Ensures that exhibition programs and projects align with the Museum\xe2\x80\x99s mission and vision; strategic and business plans, manages the exhibition review process, helping to identify and negotiate appropriate exhibition opportunities.
  • Develops outgoing exhibitions, working closely with Curators & Exhibitions Manager to prepare prospectuses and secure venues; develops exhibition materials for venues.
  • Assists the with the preparation of strategic business planning and annual budgets. Manages budgets as assigned, coordinating periodic budget review meetings, as needed. Creates budget projections for future planning purposes. Tracks budgets for curatorial expenses and processes and tracks invoices and payments to institutions, artists and vendors.
  • Assists with the preparation of grant and other funding applications and reporting to funders. Identifies support opportunities as it pertains to the activities of the Exhibitions and Collections department in collaboration with the Development department.
  • Builds relationships with donors, supporters and the broader sector to support Remai Modern\xe2\x80\x99s exhibition program and collection development through gifts, purchases and fundraising efforts.
  • Supports the preparation of media/press briefings, speeches, presentations and talking points.
  • Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and Remai Modern\xe2\x80\x99s administrative Occupational Health & Safety Policies and department procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements: EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
  • Masters of Arts in art history, curatorial studies or museum studies. PhD or Advanced degree in arts or museum management would be considered an asset.
  • Seven years current progressively responsible related experience including 5 years of experience managing a team. Current experience is defined as experience gained within the past five years.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to design inventive projects and art displays.
  • Experience originating art exhibits, all facets of research, production, installation, publication, and budget development and control; overseeing the design and production of print and web-based materials and publications.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion. Responsive to the needs of diverse communities, including the ability and experience to identify and understand intersecting issues related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, race/ethnicity, immigration status, religion, Indigenous heritage, and gender identity.
  • Collection development experience including a thorough knowledge of the CCPERB process.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct scholarly research, write to publishing standards, and organize exhibitions of art.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to express ideas and concepts effectively, orally and in writing, including the ability to prepare and present oral, written and audio-visual reports of a specialized nature and the ability to create a persuasive case to garner support for key programs and projects.
