A Day in the Life

As Managing Director, you will work closely with the President and Executive Director and will play a key leadership role in the day-to-day operations, growth and execution of the union's core work, strategies and membership activities. Here's what you can expect to dig into in this exciting, hands-on role:

Harness your progressive values and strong strategic and analytical skills to implement strategic plans and union policies.

Collaborate with the leadership team to ensure the union's vision is accurately shared and reflected throughout the organization.

Provide hands-on leadership, mentorship, and support to assigned employees to set them up for success in their roles.

Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with key external stakeholders including the union, members, and employers.

Ensures members get the best representation and support by managing the full spectrum of the bargaining process while also ensuring that the already bargained rights of members are promoted and preserved.

Oversee and establish grievance and arbitration standards and best practices, ensuring training and adequate capacity within staff to conduct grievances, arbitration cases, Labour Board hearings and other labour relations duties.

Act as the chief of bargaining, establishing annual and long-term bargaining strategy and goals.

Foster the growth of UFCW 1518 and the development of its people by managing the implementation of internal and workplace member education and engagement programs.

Your Qualifications

Previous leadership experience in a unionized environment, successfully handling contracts and navigating Labour Relations processes.

Undergraduate degree or equivalent at a recognized institution.

Formalized training in negotiation, arbitration, etc.

Comprehensive understanding of how to manage stakeholder relations and openly communicate with partners. (Completion of management course training is an asset!)

Well-versed in people management - especially through tough challenges and conflict resolution.
