JD Smith is recruiting for a Manager, Transportation Operations to work out of our facility in the Keele and Langstaff area. The Manager, Transportation Operations is responsible for our day-to-day asset-based trucking operations, providing coaching, leadership, and direction to the team, working on planning, accountability, performance metrics and results, spearheading special projects, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Manager provides coaching and support to the Dispatch and Cross Dock Teams. This is a dynamic role requiring cross functional collaboration with various teams (Billing, Maintenance, Warehouse Operations, Cross Dock). NOTE: Applicants MUST complete the assessment (which will be sent after you apply) to be considered. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Work with the Dispatch team to:
  • Ensure effective professional communication with customers at the Management level, Dispatch, and between Dispatch and drivers;
  • Liaise and coordinate Dispatch and Cross Dock tasks;
  • Develop an expert knowledge of all applicable software programs;
  • Ensure all JD Smith transportation software programs are consistently utilized fully and effectively;
  • Maintain a professional and respectful approach in all interactions with Dispatch, drivers and both internal and external customers;
  • Oversee security for transportation operations;
  • Proactively manage work schedules for Dispatch, drivers and Cross Dock to meet customer requirements;
  • Manage a proactive discipline program;
  • Develop and monitor departmental key performance indicators in conjunction with the Director, Transportation;
  • Manage issue investigation and resolution process;
  • Ensure company policies are adhered to and maintained;
  • Assist the team with the management and coordination of transportation assets;
  • Proactively manage and balance driver resources: 1. Company 2. Broker 3. Agency
  • Assist the Director, Transportation in the identification and execution of departmental initiatives
  • Work with trucking operation teams (Dispatch, Cross Dock and Maintenance) to establish and monitor SOPs for: operational delivery activities, all data entry requirements for our Transportation Management Systems (dispatch, ELD, tracking), Driver check-in to ensure accuracy of information and times, the maintenance of equipment to ensure resources are effectively utilized, Transportation operation security protocols
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 3 years managerial/supervisory experience in transportation operations
  • Proven track record organizational, leadership, motivational and disciplinary abilities
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Ex. Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Experience with a TMS Transportation Management Systems (dispatch, ELD, tracking)
COMPETENCIES:
  • Strong problem-solving abilities (root cause analysis); knows when to escalate issues
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills in a high pressure environment
  • Demonstrated track record of managing priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and customer relations skills (internal and external and at management level)
  • Proven organizational, leadership, motivational, and disciplinary abilities
  • Ability to recognize opportunities, improve process efficiencies and identify areas for continuous improvement
  • Self-starter, takes accountability and ownership of the role
  • Flexibility regarding hours of work
