JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director Operations, Last Mile, the Transportation Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day performance of a team of Delivery Drivers and Delivery Driver Supervisors, supporting a dedicated contract account. The Transportation Operations Manager implements policies and practices that reduce transportation costs, ensures regulatory compliance and improves customer service. The Transportation Operations Manager plays a key role in leading the Transportation Team whose mandate it is to meet a set of key performance indicators (KPI\xe2\x80\x99s).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Foster and maintain relationships with the customer in order to meet contracted service levels.
  • Oversee the supervision of approximately sixty (60) Delivery Drivers and three (3) Delivery Driver Supervisors. Ensure that driver and fleet policies are being complied with and follow up with corrective actions as required.
  • Manage day-to-day activities with 3PL carriers as well as Courier to Store companies.
  • Monitor 3rd party compliance reports and follow up with vendors as required.
  • Assist in internal safety & compliance audits.
  • Monitor financial performance to ensure the department is meeting or exceeding budgetary targets.
  • Establish guidelines and procedures for handling customer issues.
  • Analyse customer trends to continually enhance and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement operational improvements to ensure cost containment and customer service.
  • Review fuel prices, fuel efficiencies and fuel card usage on a regular basis.
  • Ensures that staffing levels are adequate to meet KPI\xe2\x80\x99s and reviews labour to ensure that labour costs are within budget.
  • Analyzes and report on the daily, monthly and annual achievement of key performance indicators.
  • Work closely with Operations and Customer Service Department to enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Work together with the Driver Supervisors to ensure that a good standing is maintained according to company and government safety standards.
  • Take the lead in accident investigations, insurance claims and provide recommendations for improvements to our safety programs.
  • Handle customer escalation situations that require increased attention outside of normal day-to-day activities.
  • Working knowledge of different avenues of transportation routing methods including static and dynamic
  • Build strong third party relationships in order to maximize efficiencies to achieve target profitability.
  • Ensure all vehicles are properly maintained and adhere to Company and Government standards including vehicle registrations, plates and insurance.
  • Proactively provide management with information, updates and feedback on issues and opportunities.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with internal stakeholders to sustain positive relationships with the customer and 3rd party suppliers
  • Provide leadership and direction through coaching, mentoring and developing direct reports; establishes annual performance objectives, conducts performance assessments and identifies opportunities for skill development.
  • Directs programs and activities aligned with the \xe2\x80\x98Our Way\xe2\x80\x99 Culture process to promote high employee morale and engagement, employee job satisfaction and personal growth.
  • Ensures all employment related standards, programs and procedures, including Health and Safety, are in place and adhered to in order to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation and company policy. Specifically, as it relates to Driver Safety and procedure compliance.
  • Be proficient with excel (pivot tables, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND JOB KNOWLEDGE
  • Preferably a college diploma or degree in business management with focus in logistics and transportation management.
  • 5-7 years management experience in the transport industry overseeing supervisors and delivery drivers, ideally in the courier business.

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, and able to represent the Transportation team across all levels of the business.
  • Capable of working independently across a variety of settings, assessing and resolving day-to-day issues and concerns.
  • Proven ability to manage multifaceted teams.
  • Solid technical skills \xe2\x80\x93 including an understanding of MS Office applications with proven experience using Excel. Previous experience with warehouse and transportation information systems is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional relationships in a complex environment, both across and outside the organization.
  • Excellent people leadership abilities and a dedication to continuous improvement
  • Superior planning and organizational skills with the ability to perform multiple tasks, schedule priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Approachable, positive demeanor with a hands-on and team-oriented work style.
  • Strong business acumen including conflict resolution experience.
  • Ability to manage change and adapt to changes quickly, as well as, work under time pressures.
  • Highly outcome focused with the ability to make decision and prioritize the assignment of resources in a fast-paced work environment.
