We encourage and actively seek applications from Indigenous, Black, racialized people, visible minorities, 2SLGBTQIA+ persons, all genders, and persons with disabilities.GBC VisionTo be a college renowned for its inclusion, excellence, relevance, impact, and leadership.Position Description:Under the direction of the Director, Sustainability, the Manager, Sustainability and Compliance is responsible for the development and implementation of sustainability and environmental compliance programs and initiatives to support George Brown\'s vision 2030 and strategy 2026 mandates. The incumbent collaborates with administration, faculty, students, external community partners, consultants, and vendor partners to embed and support a culture of sustainability across all aspects of the college including its operations, academic mission, and community engagement activities.Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports development and implementation of the institution\'s Sustainability Plan which will align with GBC\'s Vision 2030 and 2026 Strategy which recognizes environmental sustainability as a strategic priority.
  • Supports identification of opportunities to engage the campus community in deepening its commitment and embedding of sustainability into all campus areas and functions with a foundation of equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement sustainability programs and initiatives.
  • Manages the development of appropriate tools and resources to support the GBC community to adopt and embed sustainability best practices into their work.
  • Collaborates with the capital projects teams on capital related new and current campus sustainability projects.
  • Collaborates with departments and faculties to embed sustainability into campus operations and processes (e.g., procurement, recruitment, orientation, student success, equity diversity inclusion and indigeneity, college committees, marketing, etc.).
  • Manages internal and external sustainability benchmarking, reporting and communications including Sustainability progress reporting for various audiences, government reporting requirements, workshop development, award, grant, and conference submissions.
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends new sustainability best practices, tools, innovations and emerging trends from peer institutions and industry on a local and international scale.
  • Supports in the development of capital and operational budget plans including long range planning and accurate forecasting of annual expenditures.
  • Delivers programs, independently and through partnerships with internal and external stakeholders that will be deemed material and important to the college.
  • Supports the development of standards, policies, and procedures for all institutional sustainability initiatives by engaging diverse stakeholders (e.g., sustainable procurement, waste management, sustainable transportation etc.).
  • Represents GBC at provincial and national level in post-secondary sustainability organizations (e.g., AASHE, OCUSP, etc.).
  • Oversees planning and implementation of sustainability events and communications and be accountable for program outcomes to further campus sustainability culture and awareness.
  • Oversees management of the College sustainability website and social media communication.
  • Engages with academic divisions to support opportunities for students in any program to participate in sustainability related experiences by contributing towards initiatives within the sustainability plan.
  • Supports and collaborates with faculty as they develop frameworks, tools, and processes to incorporate sustainable learning outcomes within programs and courses.
  • Hires, manages, and coaches staff, interns and work study students working with the Office of Sustainability (e.g., plan work schedules, approve timesheets, assign, and supervise work performed, provide guidance, evaluate performance, provide professional development opportunities, etc.).
  • Keeps abreast of and evaluates applicability and impact of regulation and proposed bills to institutional operations and provides recommendations for the best course of action.
  • Manages response to Federal, Provincial and Municipal government regulations and reporting requirements related to sustainability (e.g., waste reduction and reporting).
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum four-year degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in relevant field of study (e.g., Sustainability, Sustainable Development, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Management, Community Psychology).
  • Master\'s degree would be considered an asset.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP), Scrum Master, Agile project management, WELL AP, LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and/or other relevant designation is an asset.
  • Minimum five (5) years\' progressively responsible management experience in developing sustainability and community engagement initiatives and maintaining environmental compliance programs in large institutions (experience in the post-secondary, hospitality, culinary, waste management and construction industry is an asset).
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects, process improvements and change management.
  • Experience leading in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • Experience collaborating with teams leading anti-racism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and indigenous initiatives.
  • Experience with contract review and management, as well as budget planning and management.
  • Familiarity with corporate and academic sustainability reporting frameworks, e.g., Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), Sustainability Tracking and Rating System (STARS), Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Integrated reporting (IR), UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Implementation framework, and UNEP\'s sustainable university framework.
Skills and Attributes:
  • Demonstrated skills/training in sustainability, environmental compliance management, project management, partnership development, communications, and behaviour change.
  • Excellent analytical and research skills.
  • Ability to synthesize diverse research and outreach initiatives into succinct communication for various audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide sound guidance and advice to all levels of management.
  • Proven track record for project planning, implementation, and management.
  • Solid written and oral communications skills, especially with regards to effective presentation preparation and report writing, and public speaking.
  • Ability to educate and persuade people regarding sustainability issues.
  • Demonstrated skills in team building and people management, including leadership and conflict resolution.
  • Able to travel between campuses, and externally for events and meetings.
  • Excellent customer service, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College\'s priorities on diversity and equity.
