Manages the design, specification, and installation of structural and building science elements for the construction, renovation, and maintenance of all CPC-occupied buildings. Is the corporate authority for structural engineering and building science and is accountable for the standard of quality for all installations.

Job Responsibilities

Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Manager, Real Estate Structural Engineering.

  • Manages in-house and consultant resources for the design, preparation of specifications and drawings, review of shop drawings, site inspection, and acceptance of structural and building science elements for the construction, renovation, and maintenance of all CPC occupied buildings.
  • Establishes and monitors corporate structural and building science standards and guidelines, including floor loading in operations facilities, and ensures the provision of structural and building science systems to satisfy the requirements established by Corporate Design Standards and Prototypical Design. Ensures the application of relevant codes and regulations.
  • Provides terms of reference for structural and building science consultant requirements, and provides advice and recommendations on consultant selection.
  • Ensures that consultants\' building programs comply with functional corporate requirements, project-specific requirements and the provision of structural and building science systems.
  • Reviews and approves consultants\' designs at conceptual stage, ensuring compliance with functional corporate requirements and project-specific requirements before proceeding to final design. Approves consultants\' final designs, ensuring compliance with general corporate requirements and project-specific requirements before proceeding to construction.
  • Reviews and approves final consultant designs for major projects confirming the recommended implementation regarding best design practice. Ensures cost efficiencies have been carried forward to the final design are within or better than industry norms. Continuously seek and identify cost efficiency opportunities based on industry bench marks and technological advancements.
Job Responsibilities (continued)
  • Investigates structural and building science problems in existing buildings, such as floor loadings or envelope failure, and recommends corrective action. Decides on the engagement of specialized consultants where cost effective and appropriate. Procures consultants services as required to resolve mechanical/electrical technical issues and questions.
  • Provides professional structural engineering expertise and support to Mail Operations, Commercial Operations, Systems and Engineering, and other Real Estate and Corporate groups, and Regional organizations for project definition and implementation.
  • Organizes and directs national building programs, which have structural engineering considerations in general - and floor load considerations in particular - as a major element.
  • Liaises with manufacturers and specialized organizations such as the National Research Council (NRC), and professional construction associations to maintain standards and guidelines on a current basis. Maintains effective working relations with users, consultants, other Corporate functions and the Regions.
  • Through monitoring and audits, ensures that the integrity of the design process is maintained in an outsourced and decentralized project delivery structure
  • Keeps informed of technological advances as these affect structural and building science issues and initiates action to effect appropriate modifications.
Qualifications

Education
  • University degree in structural engineering. Alternatively a college diploma in structural technology
Experience
  • 7-10 years\' experience in managing the design, specifications and installation of structural building systems and equipment for the construction, renovation and maintenance of large industrial and commercial facilities
  • 7-10 years\' experience with design and construction of medium to large industrial building( foundations, slabs, steel structure, roofs, parking lots)
  • Experience in providing technical advice for building structural systems/ installations/ modifications
Other Candidate Requirements
  • Review of consultant designs for compliance to CPC specifications and building codes
  • Civil experience with geo technical review would be an asset, for building foundation, parking lots
  • Able to cooperate with others and to motivate the team to accomplish goals
  • Can make detailed plans with clear action steps and gain agreement to proposals and plans
  • Adaptable and receptive to new ideas
Other Information
  • 24 months temporary assignment with possibility of extension or permanency
