Reports to: Director, Retail Communication - Internal

Position: Permanent full-time

Loblaw is a large organization, with a number of different divisions, products and services \xe2\x80\x93 all geared towards the needs of 19 million Canadians that shop with us every single week. We operate in grocery retail, pharmacy retail, apparel, financial services, eCommerce, and more. We need an experienced, creative and collaborative individual to help keep our people informed \xe2\x80\x93 and excited \xe2\x80\x93 about all this great stuff. We have dynamic communications tools, and we need someone knowledgeable and excited to use them. That\xe2\x80\x99s why we are looking for a Manager, Internal Communication to support our Market, Wholesale, Liquor and Optical teams.

Here\xe2\x80\x99s what you\xe2\x80\x99ll need to do:


  • Establish strong working relationships with leaders from the Market, Wholesale, Liquor and Optical teams. This includes providing expert service and counsel to the divisional president and their entire senior leadership teams as needed.

  • Lead all aspects of communication plans within and about the Market, Wholesale, Liquor and Optical teams; maintain consistency in the approach to communication across the teams, but, simultaneously customize messaging for the audience. Ensure passionate support of the teams\xe2\x80\x99 unique customer value proposition, or purpose.

  • Play a lead role in the awareness and adoption of our digital workspace, known as fl!p and our internal social media channel- Yammer.

  • Support the development of a communication approach for Store Operations, Category teams, and frontline colleagues and employees, by using our internal digital workspace.

  • Deliver engaging internal communication plans in support of our customer-facing programs; this includes hyping our seasonal campaigns to create colleague ambassadors.

  • Lead and deliver a wide range of corporate communication tactics, including annual conferences, departmental town halls, video segments, newsletters, executive speeches, external presentations, intranet articles, all company announcements, and more.

  • Foster a continuous improvement demeanour within the department, by effectively measuring the impact of communication efforts post-implementation and adjusting wherever necessary.

  • Act as a guardian of our internal brand standards. This includes managing our internal tone of voice based on the message at play.

  • Lead crisis communication plans, as needed. Spoiler alert: this can involve working evenings and weekends from time to time.

  • Occasionally travel in Canada (and abroad) to support various events and connect with frontline colleagues.


Ideally you will have:

  • 5+ years of related experience, primarily in internal communication, doing most if not all of the things noted above.

  • University degree, with specialization in English, Communication, Public Relations or a related field.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a belief in plain language, and an ability to write in various styles and formats.

  • Track record of planning and implementing strategic communication plans that drive measurable business results.

  • Track record of planning and delivering in-person, hybrid and virtual events of various sizes.

  • In-depth understanding of internal communications principles and practices.

  • Proven ability to support and counsel senior leaders; strong interpersonal skills.

  • Experience with script development and video production.

  • Advanced knowledge of, and experience using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word and PowerPoint).

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to adapt to change and meet timelines (without sacrificing quality!).

  • A positive demeanour, a desire to learn, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves to get work done either independently or as part of a team.

  • Assets: bilingualism, experience in the retail industry, and a sense of humour.
