Manager, Corporate Accounting and Controls
Summary
The Manager, Corporate Accounting leads the end-to-end corporate accounting function, oversees compliance with internal and external control requirements and manages risks and opportunities to ensure compliance with business, audit and regulatory requirements. The incumbent is guided by defined goals and objectives and works under the broad supervision of the Director & Assistant Controller.
Responsibilities


  • Oversee the end-to-end corporate accounting team and their functions, including investment accounting for general fund and investment funds, corporate financial reporting (including supporting bank and account reconciliations), coordination of corporate expense budget, and coordination of corporate banking, to ensure accurate and timely financial information

  • Prepares and provide financial and operational reporting and analysis to senior management and other relevant stakeholders

  • Ensure that key internal and external reporting timelines are met

  • Ensure the team completes all regulatory filings accurately and on-time

  • Ensure issues and exceptions are identified and resolved and that root-cause analyses are undertaken and solutions and preventative measures are developed and implemented. Collaborate with internal stakeholders and vendors to identify and resolve issues, escalate issues to senior management where appropriate

  • Ensure that adequate internal controls for corporate accounting processes, procedures and requirements are developed, communicated, implemented and followed

  • Research and makes recommendations to senior managements for complex accounting and regulatory changes;

  • Identify gaps in current processes, discuss potential implications and make recommendations for improvement; document evidence of compliance for financial reporting requirements

  • Acts as the lead for coordination of internal and external auditor document delivery requests

  • Collaborate with management in the assessment of non-routine and complex accounting transactions

  • Participate on inter-company and external life insurance and mutual fund/investment industry working groups

  • Other duties, projects and initiatives as assigned

  • Coach and mentor team members; identify employee training and development needs; participate in the hiring and employment processes for team members; set employee goals and objectives, manage employee performance

Skills / Knowledge / Education

  • Completion of a university degree with courses in financial accounting, management and business administration

  • 5+ years of professional work experience within the accounting and finance discipline, preferably in the insurance and investment management industry

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required

  • People management is a strong asset

  • Proven experience in a financial accounting role

  • Proven experience in effectively prioritizing and executing tasks in a high-pressure environment

  • Proven experience developing and implementing process and control improvements

  • Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet, database and word processing software

  • Tact, diplomacy and the ability to handle confidential information

  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks or projects

  • Ability to think logically, analyze and solve problems

  • Attention to detail/accuracy

  • Well-developed team building, coaching and mentoring skills

  • Strong communication (verbal and written), negotiation, persuasion and presentation skills

  • May be required to work extended hours
