Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the permanent, full-time position of Maintenance Electrician with the Facilities Maintenance & Operations division of Property, Fleet & Environment. Reporting to the Supervisor, Building Operations, the Maintenance Electrician will be responsible for work in the general upkeep of daily electrical maintenance, troubleshooting motor controls, telecommunications, assembly of new motor control circuitry, and the planning and layout of work to be carried to completion according to the latest edition of the Canadian Electrical Code.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repairs, replaces or rebuilds various components of motor controls. Install and troubleshoot variable speed drive, soft start/stop controllers, various instrumentation, involved with the programming of programmable logic controllers.
  • Builds electrical control panels.
  • Aids and instructs various contractors with regard to repairing and upgrading of telecommunication, motor controls and panel upgrades
  • Consults with supervisor and contractors in the design of enclosures and reviews drawings for new installations to ensure it is in compliance with Canadian Electrical code and H.R.M. Municipal Standards.
  • Wires to code, projects of various sizes within HRM facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Must have Grade 12 or equivalent education and experience.
  • Must have a Red Seal Journeyperson Electrical Certificate in the Electrical Construction trade issued under the authority of the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualification Act of Nova Scotia.
  • Must have five (5) years journeyperson experience.
  • Industrial Electrical license considered an asset.
  • Must have a valid N.S. Driver\'s License with good driving record. Drivers abstract required prior to appointment.
Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to read and follow electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Willing to upgrade and successfully complete training in electrical techniques and practices and related computer applications.
  • Good communication and writing skills.
  • Good attendance and work record.
  • Must be able to climb and work at high heights, including bucket truck experience.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Fire alarm panel experience an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of Building Automation Systems.
  • Good working knowledge of electronics.
  • Excellent knowledge of motor control center.
  • Knowledge of all applicable codes and demonstrated ability to apply the codes.
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

HOURS OF WORK: 8:00am - 4:00pm, 35 hours a week

SALARY: NSGEU 222 Level 7, $33.08 per hour

WORK LOCATION: 375 Cowie Hill Road, Halifax
