Job Description

Specific Responsibilities Include:



Rough-in of low voltage structured wiring of data/video/security:

This is the primary and most specific responsibility. "Rough-in" refers to the initial phase of wring installation where wires are pulled through walls, ceilings, and floors before the drywall or finished surfaces are installed.

Data:

Ethernet cables for internet and network connections (Cat5e, Cat6, etc.)

Video:

Coaxial cables for cable TV, satellite, or CCTV cameras; potentially HDMI or other specialized video cables.

Security:

Wiring for alarm systems (door/window contacts, motion sensors), surveillance cameras, access control systems, etc. "Structured wiring" implies a planned, organized cabling system designed for future expansion and flexibility, often utilizing a central distribution panel.

Position requires some heavy lifting, crawling, and other physically strenuous activities:

This highlights the physical demands of the job. Technicians often need to: Lifting boxes of cable, tools, and equipment. Crawling in attics, crawl spaces, and tight wall cavities to pull wires. Work in awkward positions, climb ladders, and be on their feet for extended periods. Organizing their workspace, tools, and materials efficiently.

Experience:



An ideal candidate has experience in the following:



Low voltage wiring:

This is directly related to the "rough-in" responsibility and is the most crucial experience. It means the candidate should have practical knowledge of how to: Pull and run various types of low voltage cables. Terminate cables (e.g., crimping RJ45 connectors for Ethernet, F-connectors for coaxial). Understand wiring diagrams and schematics. Troubleshoot basic wiring issues. Adhere to relevant codes and standards (e.g., NEC Article 800 for communications circuits).

Basic construction skills:

This indicates that the job may involve some light construction work, such as: Drilling holes through studs, joists, and fire blocks. Cutting and patching drywall (though often this is done by a dedicated drywaller, a basic understanding is helpful). Using hand and power tools safely and effectively. Understanding building structures to determine the best path for wiring.
