The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Lab Technician to work in the Science department within our Senior and Middle School. This is a full-time, permanent position, supporting the smooth operation of the science labs, which includes preparing materials, setting up labs for classes, as well as supporting students as needed. Working closely with faculty, the Lab Technician is responsible for maintaining lab equipment and supplies and communicating health and safety protocols to students and colleagues.

This position follows the academic calendar year (September - June).

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with all members of the science department to ensure that all apparatus and material for all science labs are prepared including Biotechnology labs set-up with all equipment, supplies, PCR machine;
  • Preparing chemical and biological solutions with sound knowledge of chemical safety;
  • Organizing and maintaining all equipment and labs;
  • Assisting teachers and students to locate supplies, lending out equipment, ordering new supplies for students, and follow-up on returns;
  • Organizing the yearly disposal of chemical and biological waste including review throughout the year that chemicals waste, storage procedures and safe handling practices are in place;
  • Updating, maintaining and replenishing the inventory of supplies, equipment, chemicals, data logging equipment and MSDS sheets;
  • Supervising dry ice delivery and safety precautions;
  • Participating in monthly risk management including an inspection of the labs to ensure compliance and assessing any potential health and safety risks;
  • In collaboration with science teachers, supervising and assisting students in the lab, answering questions, ensuring health and safety, proper lab technique and preparing materials for investigations;
  • Providing some instruction and assistance to students with understanding MSDS sheets and specific techniques concerning scientific concepts and projects;
  • Work closely with the maintenance department to request and follow-up on repairs and lab and chemical storage room improvements.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Related post-secondary training including completion of lab technician courses or equivalent;
  • WHMIS training is considered a strong asset;
  • Lab technician technical expertise;
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Able to understand and follow through on instructions and direction;
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft and Google Suite applications and comfortable with accessing online databases and information when required.

Target Hiring Range: $45,100 \xe2\x80\x93 56,300 per annum (salary is prorated based on a working schedule of September - June each year)
