Junior Hydrogeological TechnologistHydrogeological Consultants Ltd. (HCL) has been a leading service provider in the field of hydrogeology since 1969. From groundwater licensing to water source management, HCL also offers all-inclusive compliance monitoring programs, utilizing innovative technology to efficiently address the needs of industrial, agricultural, and municipal water supply development.Position OverviewThe individual filling this position will gain practical field and data management experience, learning from junior, intermediate, and senior staff. The Junior Hydrogeological Technologist will assist in collecting, processing, and managing hydrogeological data; assist in all aspects of water well testing, and groundwater and surface water monitoring field work; and study and document quantities, distribution, disposition, and development of groundwater. This individual will represent the company in a courteous and professional manner at all times; good verbal communication is an essential part of relationships with landowners and contractors. At times this position will require working in the field with shifts varying from approximately 5 to 10 days in length, with short breaks in between.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct supervised field work as required; may involve extended periods in the field, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays
  • Assist with groundwater monitoring equipment installation, groundwater and surface water sampling, aquifer testing, field-verified water well surveys, etc.
  • Assist with the collection and processing of hydrogeological data
  • Assist with maintaining the groundwater monitoring equipment management system
  • Maintain field equipment and general housekeeping in shop area
Qualifications
  • Hydrogeological or Geological Technology diploma*
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Registered or eligible for registration with Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET)*
  • CSO; H2S Alive; Standard First Aid and CPR with AED; TDG; WHMIS - required (can be obtained once employment begins)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (English)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Word and Excel - required
  • Interest in developing technical skills through both internal and external training
  • Conviction to improve personally and support continuous improvement in the company
  • Able to work independently and take initiative
  • High level of personal integrity and a strong work ethic
  • Valid non-GDL Class 5 Alberta driver's licence
  • Able to successfully pass pre-access drug and alcohol screening
  • Legally permitted to work in Canada*
* Proof of education, ASET registration, and eligibility to work in Canada must be provided if requested.Assets
  • Instrumentation Engineering Technology diploma
  • One to two years of related experience and/or training (oilfield, wellsite, groundwater, environmental, stream gauging, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Access, SQL, or other databases
  • Familiarity with Esri ArcView / ArcGIS
  • Familiarity with Microsoft PowerPoint
Work Conditions
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations
  • Travel and field work required (25% to 75% - will vary by season and workload)
  • Working overtime, evenings, weekends, and/or statutory holidays may be required
  • Lifting and/or carrying up to 100 lbs / 45 kg
  • May be exposed to hazards associated with field work
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment as applicable
  • Must be able to meet the company's and clients' safety requirements
Work Environment
  • Job duties carried out primarily in the Edmonton office, with field work to be done as needed

  • A positive, collaborative, and safety-minded attitude is essential; the Junior Hydrogeological Technologist will be working closely with and supervised by experienced Hydrogeological Technologists and Hydrogeologists, and will be expected to work cooperatively toward a common goal
