Job Description

In this dynamic, fast paced environment, the Health and Safety Manager is responsible to foster and promote a positive health & safety culture. Reporting to the Director, Human Resources this position's responsibility includes ensuring that all safety legislation and legal requirements are maintained through education, training, employee involvement; and to implement best practice initiatives to minimize occupational risks. This role provides technical expertise to all FPI locations (Canada, US and Australia) and to a variety of audiences, including union and non- union employees, related to health, safety and wellness.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and develop FPI employees in a manner consistent with FPI mission and guiding principles; ensuring employees have the tools and environment to meet their objectives, remain effective and feel appreciated
  • Maintain professional business relationships across all departments to create an efficient information channel; share information and keep other informed of important developments
  • Implementation and training of Health & Safety programs to ensure compliance with regulations; set a positive example by following regulations, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and maintaining hazard awareness
  • Lead and maintain a positive environment focusing on Lean and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Develop a solid understanding of the company's products
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance to Health & Safety Advisor and other team members
  • Develop, implement, manage and maintain an effective Health and Safety program in union and non-union environments, which complies with OH&S Regulations; oversee and enhance proactive health and safety activities; ensure effective communication
  • Develop, implement and manage standard operating procedures related to safe work practices
  • Responsible for safety program, including WHMIS and other training, hearing tests, emergency response and other safety elements as required
  • Coordinate and facilitate technical safety and awareness training sessions for all manufacturing employees and staff including branch locations
  • Coordinate the onboarding program for Health & Safety
  • Conduct hazard and risk analysis and assessments
  • Responsible for the crisis management program and for management of the response to a crisis
  • Oversee contractor safety program
  • Oversee Accident Investigation program; coordinate the investigation process for accidents, incidents and work stoppages; Key contact for Worksafe BC, Ontario, US and AUS counterparts; manage workplace injury claims
  • Liaison with internal stakeholders and external providers to assist with appropriate care and services to facilitate timely and safe Return to Work program
  • Maintains a Gradual Return to Work and Modified Duties program; and manages and coordinates with Supervisory team
  • Assist with preparing budget and managing profit & loss of department
  • Participate in the development of health and safety performance measures, data collection, maintenance and interpret results to provide recommendations for management review
  • Deliver statistics/trends on Work Safe claims, accidents and incidents for management review
  • Advise senior leadership on all safety issues
  • Ensure that appropriate safety initiatives are implemented, documented and standardized to effectively and efficiently meet corporate objectives and targets
  • Coordinate and chair/co-chair Joint Health & Safety committee
  • Manage First Aid requirements including employee certification and medical supplies
  • Develop a solid understanding of the company's products.
  • Assist with and support team projects and duties as required.
  • Other related duties as assigned
Abilities/Skills/Knowledge
  • Passionate about safety; proactive and provides knowledge and expertise relating to Health & Safety
  • Conducts self in a professional manner and uses professional discretion when handling sensitive matters
  • Maintain close working relationships to create an efficient information channel
  • Liaise between departments to effectively provide relevant information
  • Advise other teams of potential issues and use a cooperative approach to problem solving
  • Strong Microsoft office skills
  • Proven ability to lead meetings and facilitate training sessions
Education/Training
  • Occupational Health & Safety Certificate or Diploma
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is an asset
  • Occupational First Aid- Level 2 (minimum) an asset
Experience
  • Previous experience in a unionized manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements in BC, Ontario, various locations in US and Australia is an asset
