Position Summary:

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of the Rare Books and Special Collections (ROAAr) Reading Room. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Develops procedures and make recommendations to improve unit efficiency. Acts as resource person, resolves problems, instructs others and provides technical advice. Maintains records. Processes library materials and interlibrary loan requests. Provides basic reference service, such as demonstrating the routine use of the public catalogue and other finding aids.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Rare Books and Special Collections (ROAAr) Reading Room. Has oversight for the reading room staff schedule and manages room bookings related to classes, events, and exhibitions.

Provides information concerning reading room policies, procedures, and the process for consulting materials. Provides basic reference service. Supervises reading room and monitors compliance with library policies.

Processes holds of library materials, as well as loans and returns. Issues borrowing card.

Compiles data, maintains records and files. Prepares departmental statistics and reports. Analyses and discusses results and their interpretation with others.

Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment, systems, and techniques.

Manages the reading room staff schedule. Assists in the selection of casual staff and approves time sheets for payment of casuals. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of casual staff and participates in their training.

Locates, collects, sorts and shelves library materials. Conducts inventory, shelf reading and collection-shifting projects as required.

Receives cashless payments and issues receipts. Prepares receipts for the Finance office.

Uses office equipment such as computer, scanner, and photocopier. At ease in a PC environment using the Microsoft suite.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Experience working with rare books and archives preferred. Relevant university degree is an asset. Strong English spoken and written skills, French spoken. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. Proven ability to prioritize and multi-task. Proven ability to help plan and carry out complex projects required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and initiatives. Comfortable lifting and moving library books, and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 lbs. At ease in a PC environment using the Microsoft suite and ability to learn other software as required.

Minimum Education and Experience: DEP - Office Systems 4 Years Related Experience /

Hourly Salary: (MUNACA Level G) $30.28 - $37.52
