This is an opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic student who is interested in pursuing a career in Geography and/or GIS to gain experience in mapping and analysis for public safety applications. The selected individual will support senior staff within the Analytics team with Community Services working on a variety of projects requiring GIS analysis, documentation and custom mapping. Under the guidance of the Team Leader and the Geospatial Analysts, primary duties include:

  • Complete assigned Calgary Fire data request tasks such as basic mapping, creating maps of incident & station locations, aquatic rescues, needle debris pick up, motor vehicle collisions, critical medical interventions, and accident mapping.
  • Mapping & Analysis for Livery.
  • Provide recommendations to update and review existing models (process to automate repeatable projects and steps in mapping) to leverage more efficient ways to create existing map locations.
  • Review and update new hydrant locations to CFD hydrant maps as required.
  • Help to convert and document maintained (weekly, monthly and quarterly) projects.
  • Assist with reviewing and documenting changes to key datasets and maps, which includes tracking the steps for updates to assist in creating a repeatable process to keep the data and maps current.
  • Assist with Recreation planning and mapping.






Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program related to Geography, Planning, GIS, Urban Planning.

  • Intermediate ArcGIS, ArcPRO, ArcGIS Online and Windows Office.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with intermediate/advanced proficiency with ESRI products and Microsoft Office.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience using GIS including geospatial data management, cartographic design, data analytics and spatial analysis techniques.

  • GIS, mapping & analytical experience. Use of FME & Modelbuilder and some understanding of R Statistics would be an asset.

  • Knowledge of project management principles would also be an asset.

  • Success in this position requires clear and concise communication, attention to detail and problem solving, analysis, self-motivation and initiative.


Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in school on a full-time basis with the intent to return to school full-time in the Fall of 2023.
