Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Child Intervention Caseworker is a front line position responsible for receiving and assessing safety and risk concerns for children and youth. This role works directly with parents, extended family and community members to mitigate identified risks and ensure child safety. The Caseworker must adhere to the Child Intervention Practice Standards, including requirements for face-to-face contact with children, youth, parents and caregivers, documentation, assessments, as outlined in the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFEA,) Policy and Procedures. This position is available in our Calgary office, and reports directly to the Casework Supervisor.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Complete Intake and Assessment

? Participate in the Intake function on assigned days.

? Screen incoming reports and assess initial risks.

? Conduct risks and safety assessments for reports and ongoing cases.

? Assess family strengths and child resilience.

? Gather information including collateral information to determine intervention needs as per CYFEA.

? Collaborate with community members and professional partners as needed.

? Address all Guardianship and Custody needs in accordance with CYFEA and Policy.

? Complete family safety planning.

? Document using specified Intervention templates and enter data into the Child Intervention Database.

? Consult with the Casework Supervisor and submit required documentation for approval.

2. Develop and Implement Case Plans.

? Develop case plans based on assessment information

? Ensure goals on plan are realistic, measurable and clearly communicated to all parties present for case planning.

? Focus on the following developmental needs for each child/youth and work toward goals that meet these needs: Cultural, Spiritual, Physical, Educational, Social, Emotional.

? Identify and refer family to appropriate resources and monitor resources during involvement.

? Facilitate placement of children when out-of-home care is necessary

? Evaluate goals, reassess and set new goals or indicate goals are complete at CYFEA Policy recommended timelines.

? For court orders, follow the CYFEA Policy process for preparing all required documentation for court applications.

? Ensure parents/guardians are provided with all the information regarding any court applications and their right to contest the application and/or secure legal counsel is explained.

3. Provide Ongoing Case Management.

? Maintain timely, detailed documentation in line with CYFEA policy

? Maintain ongoing communication and consultation with Casework Supervisor.

? Ensure face-to-face and other forms of contact are met.

? Continually assess the level of risk and make key decisions in a timely manner.

? Organize or provide transportation for children/youth/parents/caregivers as appropriate.

? Support families in resolving conflicts and building support networks

? Prioritize permanency planning for each child. Always keep permanency for child/youth as the primary goal (this may be with parents or other family or community members).

Support caregivers and collaborate with Placement Resource staff.

4. Additional Responsibilities

? Present in a respectful and professional manner at all times.

? Respond appropriately to crisis and complex situations

? Must possess working knowledge of relevant legislation, including:

o Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and Regulations and Policy.

o Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act, (PSECA)

o Drug Endangered Children Act, (DECA)

o An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis Children, Youth and Families (Act C-92)

? Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of referred services.

? Handle court matters including applications for court orders, extensions or reviews.

? Liaise with Child and Youth Advocate as needed.

? Collaborate with community members and organizations as needed.

? Ensure that all youth on caseload have Youth Transition to Independence Plan

? Assessment and follow up as per needs of each case (i.e. assessments for AISH applications, referrals to Public Guardian etc).

? Support parents in building parenting skills

REQUIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

? Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field.

? Must have completed Delegation Training

? Knowledge and skill in the area of family violence and best practices in human services.

? Ability to conduct effective interviews with children, youth and adults.

? Knowledge of community resources and ability to facilitate professional relationships with external agencies.

? Experience working within a case management framework.

? Working knowledge of trauma informed practice.

? Understanding of issues surrounding substance use and dependency and how to apply the harm reduction model.

? Ability to engage with children, youth and families during times of crisis.

? Ability to resolve conflict, maintain control in crisis situations and restore calm after crisis.

? Knowledge of Blackfoot language and Piikani culture is considered an asset.

? Effective written and verbal communication skills.

? Ability to work independently and in a flexible manner.

? Basic computer skills.

? A valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

? Able to work some evenings and weekends on standby/rotation for crisis intervention

? Must provide up to date Driver's Abstract, Criminal Record Check and Child

Intervention Check.

SALARY

Salary will be commensurate on education and experience in alignment with Alberta social services pay grid.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $37.87 per hour
