Job Description

Preparation and Handling of Produce:



Job Summary:



The primary function of the Floater (Grocery & Produce + Cashier) is to provide overall assistance to the department supervisors in facilitating product onto the sales floor and processing transactions of customer purchases. Time spent in each department will be directed by the Front End Manager.

Responsibilities for Grocery & Produce:



Prep fruit and vegetables for creating fruit bowls and vegetable cuts, ensuring consistent quality. Utilize tools and equipment, including knives, with precision and adherence to safety protocols.

Merchandising and Display Maintenance:



Build and maintain visually appealing cut product displays, replenishing and rotating stock as needed. Ensure cleanliness and organization of all work surface tops, meeting department hygiene standards.

Stock Management and Compliance:



Follow designated departmental methods and store policies, including organic compliance standards for prioritizing, organizing, receiving orders, and labeling products. Rotate and process stock with attention to expiry dates and quality.

Cleanliness and Shelf Maintenance:



Maintain clean, neat, and well-labeled shelves (e.g., product names, pricing, and promotional details). Perform regular cleaning and waste removal to ensure a safe and appealing work environment.

Inventory Flow and Spatial Awareness:



Coordinate the flow of stock from the back storeroom onto the shelves and into bins on the sales floor. Maintain spatial orientation on the sales floor to facilitate smooth customer traffic through the aisles.

Customer Service Excellence:



Offer prompt, polite, and informative assistance to customers both on the floor and over the phone. Assist customers by retrieving products, addressing inquiries, and ensuring concerns are resolved.

Order Receiving and Equipment Operation:



Unload skids of product and receive orders efficiently. Operate equipment such as the walkie-stacker forklift when necessary. Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including CSA-approved steel-toed boots, to ensure safety.

Communication and Collaboration:



Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and customers about special orders, product requests, and day-to-day updates.

Health & Safety Compliance:



Adhere to all operational and health & safety policies and procedures during work activities.

Additional Responsibilities:



Perform any other tasks as deemed necessary by the Department Manager.

Organic Compliance



Attends all required Organic Compliance trainings and follows designated protocols In the event that compliance of organic standards procedures cannot be met, notifies manager/supervisor or Standards Coordinator. All other responsibilities related to organic compliance that are recommended by the Standards Coordinator with the support of the Operations Manager and/or Store Manager

Responsibilities for Cashier:



Provide excellent customer service by interacting with customers in a friendly, familiar and efficient manner. Perform all transactions as accurately as possible, keeping debit and credit receipts neatly placed in the sections provided Ensure manufacturer's coupons are examined and processed accurately Process refunds as per Cash Department best practices Bag groceries neatly and efficiently if required Prior to starting shift, when possible, check for new products daily (especially in the Produce Department). Notify supervisor of any customer complaints, price discrepancies, equipment problems and/or tech issues that arise Update lost grocery file as necessary Return product and bottles to designated shelves when required. Direct customers to Customer Service for returns, complaints, and other situations that warrant longer explanations unrelated to the cash front Inform supervisor of any missing supplies (staples, pens, receipt rolls, tape, etc). Arrive for the start of shift on time and ready to work. Remember to give yourself a few minutes to get settled and look over product skus and codes. Perform closing duties which can vary from trash disposal to general tidy up as directed by a Cash Supervisor. Observe the policies and procedures regarding store operations and the health and safety policy. All other duties as required by the department manager.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:



Previous experience working with produce, retail, grocery, and/or customer service is an asset Previous experience working with processing cash, debit and credit transactions an asset Ability to move loads of 45+ lbs. No previous education required Strong work ethic, shows initiative and the motivation to complete work assignments Punctuality - arriving to work on time and completing assigned shifts Flexibility of schedule (weekends and evening)

Working conditions include but are not limited to the following:



Involves working outside in all weather conditions and outside in cold temperatures May involve working in tight, confined spaces May involve difficult interactions with customers May involve moving or lifting objects of various weights (up to 55lbs) and sizes Long periods of standing and walking. Fast paced work environment at times (during store hours) May involve exposure to or use of of sharp objects, large machinery (e.g. garbage compactor, forklift) and moving vehicles Dexterity of movement to manipulate keyboard, grocery items, and bags Verbal and oral communication necessary
Hazards may include the following:

bent wrist when handling groceries with high repetition. Pushing carts with force and bent back. theft when moving cash to empty or restock till moving carts and assisting customers with carry-outs during inclement weather. lifting and moving boxes of merchandise with bent back. opening boxes with utility knife exposing staff to sharp blade.
