Summary of Role The Family Support Worker (FSW) works with families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and call The Inn for support. FSW staff will support in the provision of basic and emotional needs and services for families while they are staying in the shelter. FSW staff will work with the Family Services Team as part of the case management process. FSW staff will demonstrate a commitment to providing excellent family support, accurate and timely documentation and will contribute and commit to a respectful, inclusive and healthy work environment. Inn from the Cold works from a Trauma Informed, Harm Reduction and Housing First approach. Primary Duties & Responsibilities Family Interactions

  • Develop rapport and model positive, compassionate and healthy professional relationships and boundaries with families and colleagues.
  • Consistently engage with families in a Trauma-Informed and culturally sensitive fashion.
  • Provide pro-active and responsive care that supports the daily health and wellness needs of families during their stay in the emergency shelter.
  • Work collaboratively with The Inn Family Services team to connect families to the appropriate services and supports including provision of basic needs, meal service support, and referrals to internal and community-based programs.
  • Work closely and support Family Case Managers to support families\' housing focused goals and housing plan.
  • Answer telephone calls from people inquiring about space at The Inn using housing focused and diversion practices; track service inquiries.
  • Promote and protect the rights of family members; empower families to advocate for themselves.
  • Encourage assertiveness, communication, and self-resiliency related skills with families.
  • Ensure appropriate communication while using radios; ensure confidentiality of every family member\'s information.
For shifts that are during the awake overnight: as above; engage with and attend to client needs; complete and track safety rounds as required; cleaning and administrative support duties as directed. Documentation
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and case notes of support provided to families using established systems \xe2\x80\x94 HOMES, Program Drive folders, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Ensure accuracy, confidentiality and safekeeping of agency records according to the Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP).
  • Document actions, programming and planning that have been completed with family members.
  • Ensure all appropriate referral documentation is complete and on time.
Front Desk
  • Greet and welcome clients and visitors from a Trauma-Informed & culturally sensitive lens.
  • Provide Emergency Shelter clients access to the facility and appropriate floors.
  • Ensure front reception area is organized and tidy.
  • Answer telephone calls and walk-up inquiries; redirect to appropriate department/service.
  • Handle all situations confidentially and protect the rights and privacy of clients.
  • Administer and manage inbound/outbound mail, including priority post, packages, courier services and other correspondence as needed.
  • Manages client mail daily & notify appropriate staff.
  • Monitor office supplies and place orders when necessary including Culligan water bottle inventory.
  • Manages the phone system with the help of IT.
  • Act as the liaison with vendors for the organization.
  • Be the main point of contact for any office related inquiries.
  • Act as main floor Fire Marshall for the organization and perform emergency response duties as assigned.
  • Update posters and community resource flyers that are on display on the main floor.
  • Accept donations and fill out appropriate paperwork and follow all protocols regarding donation processes and procedures, such as accepting gifts, cheques, and cash donations.
  • Support volunteers and the Volunteer Resource team when needed.
  • Collaborate with Programs staff to facilitate, code, and issue taxi chits and bus tickets for clients.
Organizational Commitment
  • Maintain strong and positive interpersonal working relationships with coworkers, Shelter Supervisor and Management.
  • Build a team that supports each family through collaboration.
  • Develop and maintain a network of strong community relationships.
  • Participate in shift updates and update Shelter Supervisor and next shift staff of needs and/or concerns regarding families and program.
  • Participate in organizational activities including supervision, team meetings, town halls and team building.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and trainings that are a requirement.
  • Be a champion for families and services as a team member of Inn from the Cold.
  • Practice in alignment with The Inn vison, mission, and values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in organizational activities including employee engagement activities, team meetings, town halls and team building.
  • Participate in development opportunities.

Requirements
  • Must be willing and able to work designated shifts.
  • Relevant education in the human services field.
  • Experience working in a shelter/housing environment and with housing focused work and forms.
  • Adhere at all times to The Inn\'s Policies, Procedures and Code of Conduct.
  • Knowledge of housing first, trauma informed care and harm reduction practice. Minimum 2 years\' experience in working with vulnerable population.
  • Must have current First Aid/CPR.
  • Solid computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and e-mail required.
  • Suicide Intervention certificate/ASIST is an asset.
  • Excellent teamwork and team building skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in the English language.
  • Knowledge of community resources and supports.
  • Dependable; ability to plan and organize work effectively and ensure its completion.
  • Police check and Child Intervention check is required for employment.
  • Complete all required training as assigned.
Work Conditions
  • Interacts with residents, family members, staff, visitors and government agencies.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Intermittent physical activity including walking while supporting guests.
  • Active participation throughout each day; changing positions often from sitting to standing.
  • Working in crisis or emergency situations with the potential to be exposed to emotional or confrontational situations.
  • Ability to demonstrate different gross motor activities.
  • Lifting, bending, twisting, pushing and pulling items weighing up to 20kg.
