Department/Faculty Summary The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation is the premier choice for advanced study in the art and science of human movement. We offer 3 undergraduate degrees (BKin, BScKin and BARST) and 4 graduate degrees including a master of arts, master of science, master of coaching and a doctoral degree. Position Summary The Faculty General Manager will report directly to the Dean of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR). This role is responsible for overseeing the management of plans and processes to deliver operational services to the Faculty to ensure it meets its academic, research, teaching and learning objectives. As a member of the KSR\xe2\x80\x99s leadership team the Faculty General Manager (FGM) provides expert advice and counsel to key decision makers. The FGM leads and directs a multidisciplinary team. As the Faculty operates within the larger College of Health Sciences structure the successful applicant will need to work collegially and collaboratively with the College\xe2\x80\x99s leadership team, and group of assigned function specific Partners, ensure the faculty strategies are aligned and successfully implemented, and monitor the performance of the Faculty. In all facets of this role, the Faculty General Manager endeavors to integrate and advance the University\xe2\x80\x99s commitments to equity, diversity, and inclusivity. Duties
  • Act as a strategic advisor to the Dean and Faculty leadership team, developing and leading strategic planning initiatives and projects and offers expert advice, knowledge, critical analysis and solutions based on an in-depth understanding of the faculty\xe2\x80\x99s core mission, vision and strategic objectives.
  • Provide a confidential sounding board to the Dean for ideas, plans and policy matters. Support the Dean in establishing and implementing Faculty-level strategic direction and objectives.
  • Offers expert knowledge, advice, critical analysis, options and alternative approaches based on an in-depth understanding of the Faculty and the political and organizational contexts in which it operates.
  • Brokers resources and services from central and embedded functions to ensure Faculty\xe2\x80\x99s goals are achieved.
  • Fosters collaborative relationship with the College General Manager, academic program areas, research centers and institutes, employees, students, and other key stakeholders, internal and external to the faculty, to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
  • Develops an administrative operations team with assigned Partners (HR, Finance, Communications, etc.).
  • Works with Partner (Finance) to oversee the Faculty\xe2\x80\x99s budget and financial operations. Ensures the scope and cost of initiatives are planned, monitored and controlled. Demonstrates responsible use of scarce resources (physical, human and financial). Identifies, lobbies and secures resources as required; reallocates resources as necessary.
  • Ensures accurate reporting is provided to Dean to facilitate effective decision making. Anticipates data needs and responds to requests from the Dean for financial and statistical information to support decision making.
  • Oversees risk and compliance management for the Faculty, ensuring that monitoring and reporting on areas of risk are conducted on a regular basis and align with the University\xe2\x80\x99s Risk Management Strategy.
  • Manages and reviews the Faculty\'s building, facilities and other specialized infrastructure, matching against current and emerging needs. Oversees space allocation for the faculty.
  • Designs and implements solutions to operational challenges. Makes continuous improvements to services, programs or operations to increase performance and deliver results.
  • Leads and coordinates effective internal communication across the Faculty to ensure a consistent understanding of key priorities and the development of effective, collaborative working relationships across the Faculty.
  • Works with the Dean to set the planning frameworks for the Faculty ensuring they are coordinated with University and College frameworks as required.
  • Anticipates, identifies and independently resolves operational/administrative issues of substantial significance that could impact the overall functioning of the Faculty. Consults with functional experts, including legal counsel, to resolve these multifaceted issues.
  • Identifies and leads strategic projects which support Faculty initiatives, resolve emerging issues, capture opportunities, and deliver required outcomes; creates an environment that encourages innovation and enables change.
  • Facilitates scoping and prioritization for projects and initiatives, engaging the right senior stakeholders as required.
  • Demonstrate persuasive, engaging, clear and credible communication to gain support and commitment in varied situations from a wide variety of audiences.
  • Provides senior level change management advocacy to achieve acceptance of changes within the Faculty and the University.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree, advanced degree preferred.
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience, supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Significant hands-on experience in short- and long-term strategic planning, project management, public relations, stakeholder and internal communications, and issues management, preferably in a public, educational, or post-secondary context.
  • Experience with recommending strategies and proposals regarding budget allocations/reallocations and the distribution of resources to support new budget priorities.
  • Experience in space management and facilities planning.
  • High level of analytical and problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with the ability to negotiate, consult, influence and build consensus at the highest levels.
  • Planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proven ability to work consultatively and collaboratively with team members from different areas of expertise, and with senior administrators in an organization.
  • Experience in project management, business process reviews and change management.
  • Extensive knowledge of the University of Alberta policies, procedures and operating requirements.
