Job Summary

A large-scale digital transformation is in motion at CN to strategically modernize our core rail and intermodal business systems enabling improved operations execution, more rapid and cost-effective delivery of new capabilities, and enhanced decision support including autonomous decision making and real time data. There is a need for strong business architects who have in-depth knowledge of CN Business with the analytical and strategic rigor needed to map it to a technology roadmap. The role of the Expert Business Architecture is an exciting opportunity for those with the experience in the railway/transportation domain to define the business architecture for this large-scale business impact at CN.

Work with capability-specific business leaders to define the business architecture in terms of Why (strategy models), What (business capability model), How (value streams), Who (organizational models) and When (transformation models and roadmaps) to support the current and build the future business state and vision.

Using the above-mentioned artifacts and working with peer domain architects, the person identifies impacts and identifies the people, process, information, & technology changes required to reach the business capability\'s business objectives.

Main Responsibilities

Digital Transformation - Business Architectures
\xc2\xb7 Build a meaningful business value focused and risk adjusted roadmap to strategically modernize 22 core rail & intermodal systems
\xc2\xb7 Define the modernization opportunities (both strategic and tactical) and map the business value
\xc2\xb7 Deliver current state assessment, quick win recommendation, future state recommendations and transformational roadmap and subject matter expertise for a portfolio of modernization of core business systems at CN
\xc2\xb7 Define current state business capabilities, analyze the usage of the capabilities today and build the target state business capabilities
\xc2\xb7 Define a progressive transition roadmap to modernize the core rail & intermodal systems

Build Enterprise & Capability-Specific Business Architectures
\xc2\xb7 Work with the capability-specific business leaders, define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART) business outcomes which will be used as a foundation to develop an initiative\'s business value
\xc2\xb7 Produce business architecture artifacts (strategy models, business capability model, value streams, organizational models, transformation models and roadmaps)
\xc2\xb7 Interact with product managers to understand capability challenges and to develop the capability-specific business architecture
\xc2\xb7 Develop and maintain business capabilities of the enterprise in line with corporate strategy
\xc2\xb7 Work with peer domain architects, produce and maintain appropriate relationships between business, information, application, technology and solution architects to build consistent and customer centric architecture per capability
\xc2\xb7 Interact with solution / system architects to explain the business architecture and ensure understanding of the business outcomes
\xc2\xb7 Define, document and communicate business architecture standards

Governance
\xc2\xb7 Work with peer domain architects, define a comprehensive governance model to ensure solutions are developed according to the developed business architecture
\xc2\xb7 Govern solution / system architecture and development to ensure alignment with developed business architectures
\xc2\xb7 Define and enforce business architecture standards and controls
\xc2\xb7 Manage business architecture dependencies between projects

Manage Relationships
\xc2\xb7 Manage relationships & dependencies between different roles, business areas and external stakeholders
\xc2\xb7 Educate and explain how business architecture aids in achieving CN\'s business strategy and delivery of the expected business outcomes
\xc2\xb7 Educate and explain the purpose, value and use of the various business architecture models
\xc2\xb7 Educate and influence I&T so everyone understands business strategy and outcomes
\xc2\xb7 Be a champion for effective change
\xc2\xb7 Continue to build an overall understanding of CN\'s business (capabilities, processes, organization structure, business lines, operations, etc.)

Requirements

Education/Certification/Designation
\xc2\xb7 Bachelor\'s degree in computer science or information systems (or equivalent degree and experience)
Skills/Knowledge
\xc2\xb7 Recognized as an authority for thorough understanding of one or more business capabilities
\xc2\xb7 Good knowledge of business architecture best practices
\xc2\xb7 Ability to produce business architecture artifacts such as strategy models, business capability model, value streams, organizational models, transformation models and roadmaps
\xc2\xb7 Good knowledge of business process modeling
\xc2\xb7 Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change
\xc2\xb7 Ability to understand complex problems and synthetize information to multiple types of audiences
\xc2\xb7 Familiarity with strategic planning, facilitation and relationship management
\xc2\xb7 Strong analytical, conceptual and communication skills
\xc2\xb7 Ability to influence and drive change throughout the organization
\xc2\xb7 Motivated by short-term value and long-term results
Experience
\xc2\xb7 A solid understanding of CN\'s overall business or similar experience gained in other class 1 rail roads, including products, services, functions and operations (with strong business acumen) is highly desirable. Similar strong experience in the transportation sector may also be considered as relevant experience for this job.
\xc2\xb7 Experience with core operational systems in CN, other railroads or transportation sector in North America are highly desired
\xc2\xb7 Good experience understanding business and operating models, defining outcome driven strategies and building business architectures reflecting the required changes in business capabilities
\xc2\xb7 Minimum 10-15 years overall work experience
\xc2\xb7 Minimum 5 years demonstrating technical leadership qualities and/or overseeing deliverables
Assets
\xc2\xb7 Business Architecture Guild certification will be considered an important asset
\xc2\xb7 Experience leading a team
