Job Description

The role of a Relief Evening_Overnight Addiction / Peers Support Worker is to provide supervision of clients and shelter, ensuring safety and security measures are met. As well as providing crisis stabilization and conflict resolution, administrative duties and general household chores, participation in team activities and decision-making, as well as programming support as identified. They will be expected to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team of peer support workers, addiction counselors, and community outreach workers.Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Building rapport with each client to enable them to meet the daily requirements of their housing environment and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Assisting with resident routines, maintaining a general awareness of the activities or whereabouts of residents in the house.
  • Monitoring and reporting on resident's health and wellbeing, assisting with medications.
  • Resolving issues related to shared living, mediating conflicts between residents or between residents.
  • Carrying out crisis intervention activities with serious or unexpected problems.
  • Maintaining the operation of the property by conducting security, fire, health, and safety checks.
  • Increasing residents' awareness of safety issues.
  • Administering basic first aid as required and activating the appropriate emergency procedures.
  • Identifying potential issues and communicating to day staff or noting incidents as required.
  • Documenting all overnight activity, incidents, or events in appropriate logs and files.
  • Cleaning and assisting clients in cleaning designated areas of the residence.
  • Participating in the administrative activities of the program.
  • Participating actively as a team member in program delivery activities.
  • Contribute to the development of high-quality, relevant person-centered care plans, including the development of goals to support implementation.
  • Mentor and support all clients; foster growth, self-esteem, honesty, responsibility, and willingness to cooperate with peers and work a recovery program marked by specific short and long-term goals.
  • Support education related to substance use and encourage goal setting through group facilitation.
  • Maintain documentation/records of clients via Catalyst.
  • Ensure legislation, policies, standards, and guidelines are being followed.
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork and leadership skills within the interagency team.
Other duties as assigned
  • Receive phone calls, phone and email messages, and faxes and direct correspondence to the appropriate staff member(s), as required.
  • Resolve information technology and office maintenance issues, as required.
  • Order office supplies as required.

  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills with strong communication, interpersonal skills, observation, and listening.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of gender, race, sexual orientation, and issues impacting diverse communities.
  • Possess a culturally sensitive lens when working with clients and facilitating groups.
  • A clear understanding of and ability to demonstrate professional ethics, boundaries, and judgment.
  • Able to interact and communicate with others in an empathic and supportive manner while building effective therapeutic relations and rapport.
The successful candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications:
  • A minimum certificate and/or diploma in one of the sciences or a health-related discipline, with the knowledge or personal lived experience with substance use/addiction challenges and recovery
  • Experience working with the homeless and at-risk populations, preferably in a residential setting with a sound understanding of related issues and resources
  • Knowledge and grounding in Harm Reduction principles and practices
  • Strong knowledge and practice of anti-racism and anti-oppression principles and commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Ability to apply Recovery principles, strengths-based approach, and empowerment-oriented philosophies and practices in work with participants
  • Experience with crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and de-escalation skills/techniques
  • Demonstrated experience working with a team within a constructive communication model
  • Shelter Standards, Standard First Aid/CPR, crisis intervention training, an asset
  • Working knowledge of data management systems (Catalyst preferred, Microsoft Office, web resources)
  • Knowledge, understanding, and practice of trauma-informed approaches to mental health, substance use, and addictions issues
  • A successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check, as per agency policy and procedures
