Your Opportunity:

The Peer Support Worker is an essential member of a transformed, integrated, recovery-oriented team that works collaboratively. The Peer Support Worker provides interventions and supports that are complimentary to the work of Addiction & Mental Health providers by providing emotional and social support to others who share a common experience. Through their own lived experience(s) with addiction and/or mental illness(s), poverty (including homelessness) and experiences of recovery and resilience, the Peer Support Worker can authentically inspire hope and demonstrate the possibility of recovery. As a result, the service recipient's recovery and personal life goals can/are integrated with the health care team's treatment goals. Service recipients are supported in being informed and activated clients with better health outcomes, improved quality of life and greater degrees of community integration. Addiction & Mental Health providers are better prepared and proactive in providing integrated, recovery-oriented care. This opportunity allows the Peer Support Worker to harness skills across Housing, Recovery, Young Adult Services teams. This diverse position allows development of skills in individual peer support, housing, day programming (group facilitation). Peer Support Workers in this role have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of clients.

Description:

As a Peer Support Worker, you will provide interventions and supports that are complementary to the work of a multi-disciplinary outreach team. The team functions together to provide treatment, rehabilitation and support services for the diverse needs of clients navigating life impacting experiences. Through your own lived experience(s), and experiences of recovery and resilience, as the Peer Support Worker, you can authentically inspire hope to clients by sharing your story, offering mentorship and support; advocating for client needs; and supporting an integrated and resiliency/recovery-oriented health care and treatment experience.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Warm and welcoming engagement style. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. BLS Level C. This position requires a vehicle for business use. Possession of a valid driver's license and access to a motor vehicle in good repair for work-related travel is required. Class 5 Driver's license or willing to acquire a Class 5 Driver's License. Lived experience of poverty, experience in recovery from a mental health and/or addiction illness. Must be willing to share personal experience. Knowledge of systemic issues such as poverty, unemployment, stigma, medications, and the isolation felt by individuals with serious addictions and/or mental health issues. Willingness to work with clients and their families/supports. Involvement with local/emerging community of practice and with national peer support organization is strongly encouraged. Preferred Qualifications:

Able to lift and carry up to 10 KG, climb stairs (eg. Peer Support is outreached to peers/service recipients in the environment/location most appropriate/acceptable to the peer). Work is done outside of the office in a variety of community settings including service recipient homes, work places, community agencies, retail outlets, parks, and recreational facilities. Hazards can include pets and high risk neighborhoods. Must be able to independently transport self from one environment to another.
